JD Gyms expands JD BURN into HIIT, athletic and strength classes, giving members three distinct ways to train towards different fitness goals.
A decade after JD BURN first appeared on the timetable, JD Gyms is dividing the workout into HIIT, athletic and strength formats — making it easier to choose a class around a specific training goal.
Picking a fitness class is easy enough. Working out what you actually want from it can be rather less straightforward.
The new JD BURN Series from JD Gyms attempts to make that choice more explicit. Ten years after the original JD BURN class launched, the gym operator is expanding it into three separate formats built around different aims: conditioning, athletic performance and strength.
It is a relatively simple change, but a sensible one. Rather than treating group exercise as a single route to getting fitter, the new structure acknowledges that someone trying to become more confident with resistance training may not be looking for the same session as somebody chasing a fast-paced interval workout.
A familiar class becomes a training menu
JD BURN first launched in 2016 and has since become one of JD Gyms’ most established group exercise classes. The company says hundreds of thousands of members have taken part during that period.
Instead of replacing it, JD Gyms is now using the BURN name as an umbrella for a broader set of instructor-led sessions.
“The BURN Series is the natural next step, giving members more variety, more progression and more ways to train towards their goals,” says Lee Matthews, Chief Operating Officer at JD Gyms.
The move arrives at a time when interest in organised exercise appears healthy. JD Gyms cites more than 1.8 million Google searches for “exercise classes” over the past month, although that figure should be regarded as the company’s snapshot of search activity rather than live independent keyword research.
More relevant to somebody actually choosing a workout is the distinction between the three classes.
HIIT, athletic or strength?
JD BURN: HIIT is the quickest-paced of the three. The interval-based format is designed around conditioning, high-energy training and calorie expenditure. For existing BURN regulars looking for the most recognisably intense version of the concept, this is likely to be the obvious place to start.
JD BURN: ATHLETIC takes a different approach, combining strength, speed and agility work. JD Gyms positions it as an all-round performance session rather than a purely cardiovascular workout, with exercises intended to develop several physical qualities within the same class.
Then there is JD BURN: STRENGTH, built around progressive resistance training. Its stated aims include developing strength and muscle endurance while helping participants become more confident with lifting.
The useful distinction is not that one class is somehow superior to the others. It is that the labels give members a better idea of the training emphasis before the session begins.
For people who simply want a hard workout, that may sound like unnecessary detail. For anyone with a more specific goal, it makes the timetable considerably easier to navigate.
Group training is also about turning up

Programming is only part of the appeal of a group class.
JD Gyms also points to research associated with the National Library of Medicine in making the case for exercising alongside other people, particularly the social connection and support that can develop within a group setting.
The company has built much of its argument for the BURN Series around three ideas: encouragement from other participants, greater accountability and the sense of community that can come from training regularly with the same broad group of people.
Those are behavioural benefits rather than guarantees of fitness results, and the distinction matters. The new classes are designed around particular training goals; the information supplied for their launch does not present measured outcomes showing that one format produces better results than another.
What the group setting can offer, according to JD Gyms’ rationale, is another reason to keep participating. For somebody who finds solo sessions easy to postpone, the combination of an instructor, a scheduled class and other participants may be as important to the experience as the workout written on the board.
The useful part is the clearer choice
Fitness launches rarely suffer from a shortage of ambitious language, and JD Gyms describes the expanded programme as part of its continuing investment in the member experience.
The more practical development is less grandiose.
BURN used to be one class. It is now three classes with noticeably different jobs.
That matters because “getting fitter” can cover almost anything. A member interested in conditioning can choose HIIT. Somebody wanting strength, speed and agility has the Athletic format. Those who want resistance work can opt for Strength.
The change gives instructors a more defined training brief and members a clearer expectation of what they are signing up for.
Matthews says: “We’re constantly investing in the member experience, and this launch further strengthens our group exercise offering while keeping JD Gyms at the forefront of fitness innovation.”
When does the JD BURN Series launch?
The JD BURN Series launches on Monday 14 September 2026, joining JD Gyms’ existing programme of instructor-led classes.
No single workout format will suit every goal, which is precisely why dividing BURN into three versions makes more sense than trying to make one class cover everything.
For members, the proposition is refreshingly easy to understand: decide what you want to train, then choose the BURN class built around it.
