Airports have a habit of keeping us on our feet without ever making us feel particularly active. Between security, departure gates and the occasional brisk walk because somebody has misjudged the time, there’s usually plenty of movement. Very little of it is intentional.

Dubai International (DXB) is offering something rather different this November, bringing free yoga, breathwork and fitness sessions into the terminal as part of Dubai Fitness Challenge.

For travellers passing through the right concourse at the right time, it could provide a welcome alternative to another spell sitting beside the departure board.

Free Fitness Sessions at DXB on 7 and 8 November

On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, passengers travelling through Concourse D in Terminal 1 can take part in complimentary wellbeing sessions at the airport’s Fitness Village.

Running from 6pm to 9pm on both evenings, the programme will feature yoga, breathwork and fitness activities delivered by Be Relax.

The sessions form the passenger-facing part of Dubai Airports’ month-long involvement in Dubai Fitness Challenge, which aims to encourage people across the city to make physical activity part of everyday life.

The location is worth noting. These activities are taking place specifically in Concourse D rather than across the airport’s terminals, so whether passengers can participate will depend on their journey through DXB.

For those able to attend, the attraction is straightforward: an opportunity to do something active during a period normally spent waiting for a flight.

From Padel Courts to Silent Disco Power Walks

Passengers aren’t the only ones being encouraged to get moving.

Throughout November, Dubai Airports is also running a programme of activities for employees, with selected sessions extended to their families as part of the UAE’s Year of Family.

There’s a considerable range of sports involved. Cycling, padel, basketball, badminton, cricket and volleyball all feature, offering employees opportunities to take part in activities beyond their usual working routines.

Those who prefer something a little less competitive can explore sunrise yoga or a silent disco power walk.

It’s a useful mixture. Team sports provide opportunities for colleagues to get together outside work, while the alternative sessions offer different ways to participate without necessarily signing up for a match.

Bringing Dubai Fitness Challenge Into Everyday Life

The airport’s involvement reflects the wider ambition behind Dubai Fitness Challenge: encouraging people to find opportunities for movement within their existing routines rather than treating exercise as something that must always happen separately.

Meshari Al Bannai, Chief People Officer at Dubai Airports, said: “Dubai Fitness Challenge reflects the energy and ambition that define Dubai. By bringing it into our workplace and our airport, we are creating opportunities for our people, their families and our guests to take part in a citywide movement in ways that are simple and accessible. It also reinforces the kind of culture we want to build at Dubai Airports, one where wellbeing supports connection, engagement and how people experience their day.”

The distinction between the employee and passenger programmes is important. Staff have a month of activities to explore, while travellers are being offered two evenings of complimentary sessions at a specific location.

Still, bringing fitness into an airport is an interesting way to make exercise more visible in an everyday setting.

And for anyone passing through Concourse D on 7 or 8 November, the usual choice between another coffee and another look at the departure board will have some competition.
