Meet the Apple AirPods Pro 3: The World’s Smartest Earbuds

Apple-AirPods-Pro-3 on the train

Apple AirPods Pro 3 have officially landed, and they’re not just earbuds anymore — they’re miniature fitness trackers, personal interpreters, and noise-cancelling champions disguised as headphones.

Apple’s latest update to its wildly popular line takes what was already the gold standard in wireless sound and bolts on enough tech wizardry to make even the most devoted gadget-sceptic raise an eyebrow.

“With AirPods Pro 3, the most popular headphones take a massive leap forward, providing fantastic sound quality and the world’s best ANC of any in-ear wireless headphones,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

“Combined with an improved fit that provides greater stability for even more people, heart rate sensing, extended battery life, and Live Translation enabled by Apple Intelligence, AirPods Pro 3 take personal audio to the next level.”

Noise Cancellation That Puts the World on Mute

Apple claims the AirPods Pro 3 remove up to twice as much noise as the second-gen model, and four times more than the originals. That’s thanks to a “multiport acoustic architecture” — which sounds like something stolen from NASA — paired with ultra-low noise microphones and foam-infused tips that double up as tiny soundproofing walls. The result? A listening bubble that makes commuting, office drudgery, or late-night wind-down sessions sound like a private concert.

Battery life has had a shot in the arm too. You now get up to eight hours of playback with ANC switched on — a 33% bump from the previous generation.

Fit for the Masses (Literally)

The company didn’t stop at sound. Apple took over 10,000 ear scans and clocked up 100,000 hours of user research to redesign the fit. The AirPods Pro 3 now come with five ear-tip sizes — including an XXS option — and are IP57 rated for sweat and water resistance. Translation: whether you’re sprinting, stretching, or caught in a downpour, they’re not falling out or giving up.

Your Personal Trainer in Each Ear

This is where things get interesting. For the first time, AirPods can track your heart rate and sync directly with the Fitness app. A custom photoplethysmography (yes, that’s a real word) sensor beams invisible infrared light 256 times per second to monitor blood flow. When paired with the iPhone, users can log over 50 workout types, close rings, and even get motivational nudges from a new AI-powered “Workout Buddy.” It’s a level of integration no other in-ear headphones currently offer.

Talk to Me — In Any Language

Another party trick: Live Translation. Still in beta, this feature makes cross-language conversations far less awkward. Pop in the AirPods, speak naturally, and your words appear in the other person’s language on an iPhone screen — or, if they’re also using AirPods Pro 3, the translation flows seamlessly between the two of you. At launch, it works with English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean, and simplified Chinese on the way.

Built With a Conscience

AirPods Pro 3 deliver unbelievable sound quality

Apple is still hammering its environmental drum. The AirPods Pro 3 contain 40% recycled content, use 100% recycled cobalt in the battery, and come wrapped in fibre-based packaging that can be tossed straight in the recycling bin. They’re also manufactured with renewable electricity across the supply chain.

Pricing and Availability

Pre-orders are open now, with official availability starting Friday, September 19. Prices begin at £219. New buyers can also claim three free months of Apple Music and Fitness+. For peace of mind, AppleCare and AppleCare+ options are available to cover accidents, theft, and battery replacements.

Verdict

The Apple AirPods Pro 3 aren’t just another upgrade. They’re Apple’s bid to turn your earbuds into an everyday health companion, language tutor, and personal concert hall. The sound is richer, the fit is smarter, and the extras — from workout tracking to live translation — make them far more than a pair of headphones. At £219, they’re not cheap, but they’ve stretched the definition of what wireless earbuds can be.
