In a fitting tribute to their outstanding contributions to the sport, several England cricketers have been recognized in the King’s Birthday Honours. Lydia Greenway, Adil Rashid, and Sam Curran are among the distinguished names celebrated for their achievements on and off the field.
Lydia Greenway, a true legend of the game, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE). With an illustrious career that spans over 200 appearances for her country, Greenway has tasted victory in two World Cups and four Ashes series. Her unwavering commitment to the sport and remarkable performances have earned her this prestigious accolade.
Reflecting on the honour, Greenway expressed her astonishment and joy, stating, “It’s an amazing honour to receive, and I was really surprised to receive it.
It’s just a really nice thing to experience. I’ve always tried to enjoy my cricket and share my enjoyment of the game with other people, and I’m very proud to be recognized in this way.”
Adil Rashid, another exceptional cricketer, has been bestowed with the Member of the British Empire (MBE) award. Rashid, a two-time World Cup winner like Greenway, has been a valuable asset to the England team with his exceptional skills and match-winning performances.
Beyond his on-field heroics, Rashid has made significant contributions to the community, reflecting his commitment to making a positive impact both within and outside the game.
Expressing his gratitude, Rashid said, “It’s nice to get the news and receive recognition for my work in cricket and in the community.
I’m proud of the things I’ve achieved on the field, including two World Cups, but I’ve always wanted to achieve things off the field in my local area.
It’s all linked. I am so grateful for the things I have, and I know some people don’t have as much as me, so I try to give what I can.”
Sam Curran, the rising star of English cricket, has also been awarded an MBE. Curran’s exceptional performances, notably earning him the Player of the Tournament title in England Men’s triumphant ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign, have left a lasting impression on the cricketing world. At such a young age, Curran’s achievements are a testament to his extraordinary talent and dedication to the sport.
Upon receiving the news, Curran expressed his overwhelming delight, saying, “I was overwhelmed and delighted to be given an MBE. You see people getting these titles, but you don’t expect it to be you. It’s an incredibly proud moment, not just for myself but for those who have helped me over the years.”
Additionally, the King’s Birthday Honours also recognized Tony Kingston, the former scorer for Northamptonshire CCC, with the British Empire Medal. After dedicating 32 years of service to the club, Kingston retired last year. Throughout his tenure, he only missed 66 overs of cricket, showcasing his unwavering commitment and passion for the game.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chairman, Richard Thompson, extended his congratulations to the honorees on behalf of cricket enthusiasts across the country.
