Inside Dexter Hotel, Elk Rapids’ New Design-Led Stay

The newly reimagined Dexter Hotel has officially opened in Elk Rapids, Michigan, bringing 29 design-led rooms and suites, a waterfront restaurant and bar, and a rather refreshing refusal to behave like just another boutique hotel with nice lamps and a logo stitched onto everything.

Set just above the Lake Michigan waterfront on Grand Traverse Bay, the hotel sits in one of Northern Michigan’s prettiest coastal corners, a short drive from Traverse City and its recently expanded Cherry Capital Airport. It is the sort of place where the light does much of the heavy lifting: clean water, big skies, fresh air, and enough Midwestern calm to make your phone feel like an unnecessary act of aggression.

But Dexter Hotel is not leaning on scenery alone. That would be lazy. Instead, it arrives with a clear point of view: contemporary design, regional craft, Michigan-made detail and a hospitality style that feels polished without becoming precious.

A Boutique Hotel Rooted In Michigan, Not Mood Boards

Created by the former creative director of Shinola and built by Shore North Development in collaboration with Kinship Hospitality founders Daniel Caudill and Kamron Bijeh-Apple, Dexter Hotel has transformed a former apartment-style building into a modern coastal retreat with a strong sense of place.

The idea is not to slap a canoe on the wall, call it heritage and hope nobody asks difficult questions. This is Michigan identity done with a better eye and fewer clichés.

The hotel’s design language draws from the state’s influential Mid-century furniture legacy, with custom white oak furniture anchoring the guest rooms, warm metals in the Noble Lounge bar and reception area, and a palette of natural, durable materials intended to improve with age rather than sulk after three seasons.

That matters. In a region where hotels can often lean either too rustic or too generic, Dexter Hotel appears to have chosen the more difficult route: restraint.

Rooms Designed Like Calm, Grown-Up Apartments

The 29 rooms and suites are designed to feel like warm, peaceful apartments rather than short-stay boxes with a mattress and a minibar pretending to be character.

Inside, guests can expect muted tones, woven textiles, soft upholstery and gallery walls featuring a mix of artistic styles. Handcrafted Serta mattresses, down bedding and Frette linens complete the sleeping set-up, which is hotel-speak for: they would very much like you to sleep properly and not wake up folded like a deckchair.

There is a quiet confidence in that approach. No shouting. No theatrical theme. No furniture that looks wonderful online and behaves like a medieval punishment device in person.

Michigan Makers Are Not An Afterthought Here

The most distinctive element of Dexter Hotel is its commitment to regional production. Nearly every major design element has been created by Kinship Studio and fabricated by Michigan craftspeople.

That includes custom sofas, lounge chairs, the Kinship lighting collection, the reception desk, the bar, beds, nightstands and even drapery sewn by a local Traverse City seamstress. It is a level of regional sourcing that gives the hotel texture, not just talking points.

Guests will find the Kinship Ceramics Collection throughout the property, including bowls, trays, cups, plates, soap dishes and lamps created specifically for the hotel by local Traverse City ceramicists. Custom flush-mount ceiling fixtures were designed for Dexter Hotel and manufactured by Britten Inc. in Traverse City.

Salon-style gallery walls feature original work by Michigan artists including Martyna Alexander, Pier Wright and Jesse Hickman, while custom millwork shapes the reception desk and Noble Lounge bar. A custom Kinship scent adds a further sensory layer, with Salt & Stone amenities and ClaySpace Ceramics completing the regional craft story.

It is the kind of detail that gives a hotel its memory. Anyone can buy expensive things. Fewer places can make them feel inevitable.

Noble Lounge Wants To Be Elk Rapids’ Living Room

At the heart of Dexter Hotel is Noble Lounge, a restaurant and bar designed for hotel guests and locals alike. That balance is important. A hotel bar that cannot persuade the neighbourhood to come in is usually just a waiting room with olives.

Noble Lounge is positioned just above the Lake Michigan waterfront on Grand Traverse Bay, with a food and beverage programme built around Northern Michigan sourcing, approachable refinement and a social atmosphere that sounds pleasantly unforced.

The bar programme is led by Beverage Director Anthony DiMaria, whose approach combines classic technique with original compositions. Molecular mixology methods, including clarified juices and fat-washed spirits, will be used to create layered drinks from familiar ingredients. The opening menu will include six to seven cocktails, supported by a robust non-alcoholic programme.

That last detail is more than hospitality politeness. Premium alcohol-free options are no longer the sad little corner of the drinks menu where imagination goes to die. Done well, they are part of a modern bar’s credibility.

Seasonal Plates With Northern Michigan Bite

Executive Chef John Korycki’s menu is built around refined, shareable plates and seasonal Northern Michigan sourcing. The kitchen is expected to launch in early to mid-June with 9 to 12 seasonal small plates.

Local farms and artisans will play a central role, including internationally award-winning cheesemakers from Suttons Bay and Northport. That should give the menu a stronger regional spine than the usual hotel fare of polite salads and burgers designed by committee.

Korycki brings more than three decades of experience rooted in Italian tradition and Mediterranean-inspired, ingredient-driven cooking. A graduate of Kendall College School of Culinary Arts and an alumnus of the Bartolotta Restaurant Group under James Beard Award-winning chef Paul Bartolotta, he has led acclaimed kitchens across the Midwest and founded a collegiate culinary programme.

Anthony “Tony” DiMaria, meanwhile, brings a distinguished background in craft cocktail programmes, including a key role at the acclaimed Sugar House in Detroit and a tenure redefining the bar experience at Otis Harbor Springs in Northern Michigan. At Dexter Hotel, his programme will include an in-house beer created with Arbor Brewing Company in Ann Arbor and bottled signature cocktails developed specifically for the hotel.

The bar and kitchen teams are also set to work closely together to maximise ingredients. In less capable hands, that can sound like a sustainability paragraph wearing a tie. Here, it has the potential to create something more coherent: a hotel experience where the food, drinks and setting actually speak to one another.

Design-Led Hospitality Without The Fuss

“Dexter Hotel represents a collaborative, design-led vision rooted in storytelling and place,” says Daniel Caudill, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Kinship Hospitality. “We approached this project by asking whether every element—every piece of furniture, every ceramic, every fixture—could be created by Michigan makers. Working with Northern Michigan’s extraordinary community of artisans allowed us to develop truly custom pieces that exist nowhere else, creating an authentic connection between design and region.”

That quote gets to the centre of the property’s appeal. Dexter Hotel is not presenting Michigan as a decorative theme. It is using Michigan as the supply chain, design reference and emotional framework.

“What we’re building with Dexter is a style of hospitality that feels easy but considered, where nothing is overdone, but everything matters,” says Kamron Bijeh-Apple, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Kinship Hospitality. “A big part of that comes to life in Noble Lounge, which is really the heart of the property—a place guests naturally spend time, whether they’re coming down for a drink, staying for food, or just settling in for the evening. The goal is for everything to feel seamless, social, and worth lingering in, without ever feeling like you’re being moved through an experience.”

That is a fine ambition. Hotels often talk about experience while gently herding guests from check-in to check-out like mildly affluent cattle. The better ones know when to get out of the way.

Built Differently, Quite Literally

Dexter Hotel also uses advanced modular stacked-box construction, with components fabricated off-site and assembled on location within days. The approach is designed to offer structural precision and strong soundproofing, with no rooms sharing connected walls, ceilings or floors.

For anyone who has ever stayed in a hotel where the next-door guest appeared to be repacking golf clubs at 1.37am, that is not a minor point. Soundproofing is luxury. Marble gets the photographs; silence gets the repeat bookings.

Future exterior enhancements will include a warm cream façade with black metal hardware, shutters and planter boxes, giving the property an additional layer of visual polish.

Why Elk Rapids Is Having A Moment

Dexter Hotel opens at a significant time for Northern Michigan. Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City is undergoing a $120 million expansion, with groundbreaking in April 2026 and completion expected by spring 2028. The project is expected to triple the airport’s capacity and add more direct flights from LaGuardia, making the region more accessible from major cities.

For travellers, that matters. Elk Rapids is already positioned within reach of Traverse City, Old Mission Peninsula, Leelanau Peninsula, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and more than 40 wineries. The Traverse City Horse Show runs from June to September, while the National Cherry Festival marks its 100th anniversary in July 2026.

Dexter Hotel also offers direct access to the public waterfront park via stairs from the hotel patio, making it a natural base for exploring the region’s outdoor and cultural scene.

This is the wider appeal: Lake Michigan views, Northern Michigan food and wine, design-led accommodation, and enough fresh-air escapism to make a long weekend feel usefully longer.

There are hotels that announce themselves with noise, nonsense and a lobby playlist trying too hard. Dexter Hotel seems to be doing something more interesting: building a sense of place from the people, materials and landscape around it. On the edge of Lake Michigan, that feels less like a gimmick and more like good manners.
