Co-op Debuts GLP-1 Friendly Mini Meals

Co-op sign on store front

If January had a national anthem, it would be the sound of a fridge door opening with ambition and closing with regret. Into that yearly ritual steps Co-op, launching a new own-brand range of GLP-1 friendly meals—a UK convenience retailer first—under a fresh health offer called Good Fuel.

From 7 January, Co-op shoppers will spot ‘Good Fuel – Power Up Your Plate’ in stores: four mini meals developed for smaller appetites, as new data suggests *3% of the UK population – which is the equivalent of one in every 30 – is now using a form of weight loss medication. The timing, you might say, is as neat as a freshly-cut fairway: a range designed for people who want the nutrition without the “did I really need all of that?” portion size.

Good Fuel: small meals, serious intent

The premise is straightforward. These mini meals are perfectly portioned, built to deliver protein, fibre, and at least two of your five a day—the kind of nutritional hat-trick that usually requires a whiteboard, a meal plan and the patience of a saint. Co-op says the flavours pull from global cuisines, because nobody ever stuck to their health goals by eating something that tastes like polite disappointment.

The new mini meals include:

  • Co-op’s Butternut Squash, Beans and Grains 250g
  • Co-op Chicken & Sweet Potato Penang Curry 250g
  • Co-op Chicken & Courgette Alfredo Pasta 250g
  • Co-op Butternut Squash, Beans & Grains 250g

Each is priced at £3.50.

Yes, you read that correctly: the Butternut Squash option appears twice in the line-up, which either means it’s a firm favourite, or someone at HQ really loves a squash. Either way, the point stands—these are smaller plates aimed at people who want to feel fuelled, not floored.

Nicole Tallant, Retail Trading Director, Co-op, said: Our members and customers are changing the way they approach health, looking for healthy and tasty choices that provide a boost of health benefits like protein and fibre, with meals that count towards their five-a-day as well as delivering plenty of flavour.

There is also a growing need to cater for smaller appetites with meals that provide the quality without so much of the quantity. This whole new range is aimed at supporting shoppers’ wellbeing in a meaningful, accessible and convenient way.

That’s the heart of it: the modern shopper still wants convenience, but they’re less interested in a “one-size-fits-all” portion and more interested in getting value from every bite.

What “GLP-1 friendly” looks like on a shelf

The GLP-1 conversation is now mainstream, but supermarket shelves haven’t always kept up. Co-op’s approach, at least on paper, is to focus on what many shoppers are already chasing: more protein, more fibre, sensible portions, and enough vegetables that you don’t have to negotiate with yourself at dinner.

It’s also a nod to reality. A “healthy option” that leaves you bored or hungry isn’t really healthy if it sends you wandering back to the cupboard at 9 pm like a moth to a biscuit tin.

Not just mini meals: Co-op adds a “holistically” healthy range

Alongside the smaller portions, the Good Fuel launch also includes a second strand: a new “holistically” healthy range with five meals featuring high-protein, slow-releasing carbohydrates, and added-benefit ingredients such as gut-friendly fibres, plus nutrient-dense vegetables. Co-op says these are built for shoppers who want a delicious, easy-to-cook, healthy meal, with each portion containing at least one of your five-a-day.

One of the headline dishes is the Piri Piri Chicken with Rice (380g) – a high-protein dish featuring marinated, cooked British chicken breast pieces in a spicy piri piri sauce, accompanied by cooked brown rice, broccoli florets, carrots, and red quinoa.

If that sounds like a lot going on, it’s because it is—and that’s not a bad thing. The aim here is “weeknight easy” without “weeknight beige.”

In other words: join the dots between value, portioning and health positioning—then give shoppers a reason to try it immediately.
