If you’ve ever stood pitchside and wondered whether blue jeans and brown shoes were part of the official rugby supporter’s kit, you’re not alone — and now Canterbury has made it official.
The legendary rugby brand has cheekily embraced the fan uniform we never knew we needed, launching a limited-edition collection celebrating the enduring charm (or is it shame?) of the classic “rugby dad” look.
In what feels like a loving roast of the terrace faithful, Canterbury of New Zealand unveiled the tongue-in-cheek campaign this week, spotlighting a fashion choice that’s less runway and more rugby club bar: blue jeans and brown shoes.
The brand’s newest release includes actual blue jeans and brown shoes — because of course it does — playfully immortalising the staple look worn by generations of fans, uncles, and former flankers who haven’t seen a gym since the ‘90s.
Modelled with deadpan brilliance by Canterbury Ambassador and ex-British & Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton — alongside the always-unfiltered Joe Marler — the campaign walks the fine line between parody and pride. The limited-edition Canterbury Blue Jeans and Brown Shoes range is now available online, just in time for summer tours and pub garden debates about who wore it worst.
“Us rugby players and fans get some stick for the infamous blue jeans and brown shoes combination,” Warburton admitted, “and it’s always entertaining to see the internet’s take on rugby’s fashion stereotypes. As long as fans are pairing their blue jeans and brown shoes with a Lions jersey this summer, they can’t go wrong!”
He’s not wrong. There’s something disarmingly honest about the look — like a 10-man rolling maul, it might not be pretty, but by God it’s effective.

Simon Rowe, SVP of Canterbury (EMEA and North America), added: “Millions of Rugby fans across the UK and Ireland are supporting their teams this summer, and we wanted to have some fun with what is a light-hearted topic amongst them.
Canterbury has been at the heart of rugby for over 120 years, and we pride ourselves on knowing what our fans want. We love the idea that even the casual rugby supporters can be kitted out head to toe in Canterbury with apparel that speaks to them, from team jerseys to iconic blue jeans and brown shoes.”
And it’s not just fan fashion that Canterbury dominates. As the official kit supplier to the British & Irish Lions, the brand’s boots are worn by elite players like Andrew Porter and Mack Hansen, proving that while the supporters might have a laugh at themselves, the gear on the field is no joke.
The campaign strikes a refreshing tone — a brand in on the joke, embracing rugby’s quirks while keeping the tradition alive. Because in the world of rugby, where loyalty is worn as boldly as the team colours, sometimes a pair of brown brogues and boot-cut denim says more than a thousand chants.
So this summer, whether you’re watching from the stadium, the pub, or the patio, throw on the jeans, lace up the shoes, and wear them with pride — just make sure the jersey’s Canterbury.
