As the leaves turn and comfort food takes the stage, even the most disciplined dieters can stumble. The trouble is, many of the so-called seasonal staples are not just cosy—they’re calorie grenades.
If you’re serious about your goals, knowing which autumn weight loss foods to dodge could save you from undoing weeks of progress.
Dr Donald Grant, GP and Senior Clinical Advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, has taken aim at the worst offenders. Spoiler: your pumpkin spice latte isn’t the innocent hug in a cup you thought it was.
“Autumn is a time when comfort eating really comes into play,” said Dr Grant. “While many people know about general unhealthy foods, there are seasonal favourites that sneak under the radar and drastically impact progress. Let’s look at six common autumn indulgences that can quickly stall weight loss.”
1. Pumpkin Spice Lattes

“These drinks are marketed as seasonal treats, but a large pumpkin spice latte can contain over 400 calories and a huge amount of sugar, the equivalent of multiple doughnuts. Because it’s liquid, it provides little satiety, leading to cravings later in the day. Instead, I recommend choosing a regular coffee with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg. You still get the autumn flavour, without the excessive calories and sugar.”
2. Halloween Sweets
“Bite-sized chocolate bars and sweets seem harmless, but add up quickly. People often underestimate their intake, and a few handfuls can equal an entire meal’s worth of calories.
If you want something sweet, I suggest opting for a piece of fruit such as an apple or pear; they’re seasonal, naturally sweet, and provide fibre to keep you full.”
3. Sticky Toffee Pudding & Other Autumn Desserts
“Traditional puddings such as sticky toffee, treacle sponge, and apple crumble are autumn staples. Unfortunately, they’re loaded with butter, sugar and cream, making them very calorie-dense.
If you want a lighter alternative, try stewed fruit with a small dollop of natural yoghurt. You’ll still get the warming seasonal flavour without so much added sugar and fat.”
4. Toffee Apples
“Toffee apples may feel like a childhood classic, but the sugar coating adds hundreds of extra calories. Worse still, the combination of sticky sugar and acidity isn’t great for teeth either.
A healthier swap is sliced apple with a teaspoon of peanut butter or a sprinkle of cinnamon; you’ll still get a sweet, satisfying snack that’s much more filling.”
5. Creamy Soups & Hearty Pies

“Autumn means more soups, stews and pies. While these feel comforting, cream-based soups and buttery pastry pies can be surprisingly high in fat and calories, especially when paired with bread or mash.
Broth-based soups or one-pot meals with plenty of vegetables, beans and lean meat are far more filling and nutritious, without stalling weight loss.”
6. Mulled Wine & Cider

“As the festive season approaches, drinks such as mulled wine and hot cider make an appearance. While warming, they’re packed with sugar and alcohol, providing empty calories that can slow fat burning and increase cravings. Instead, try spiced herbal teas, they’re cosy, aromatic, and calorie-free.”
The Takeaway
The message is simple: if you’re trying to shift the scales, steer clear of the seasonal sugar traps. These six autumn weight loss foods might feel nostalgic, but they’ll happily sabotage your efforts if you’re not careful.
Swap smart, stay warm, and you’ll get through the season lighter on your feet—and lighter on the scales.
