Aldi’s £1.31 Pancake Day Challenge: Feed Four for a Fiver

girl with a large stack of pancakes and raspberries

If Pancake Day usually leaves your bank balance looking flatter than your first attempt at a flip, Aldi has other ideas. The bargain-hunting brigade’s favourite discounter is rolling out a full Shrove Tuesday line-up for just £5.24 – that’s £1.31 per person for a family of four – and it’s doing it while taking a healthy divot out of the big-name supermarkets’ prices.

Named Which? Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for the fifth year running, Aldi is serving up all the essentials for classic lemon-and-sugar pancakes at the lowest prices on the leaderboard. The basket covers flour, eggs, milk, sugar and lemon juice, with savings of up to 62% compared to rival chains.

A full stack for £5.24

The basic Shrove Tuesday gameplan is simple: flour, eggs, milk, sugar and a sharp hit of lemon. Aldi’s pitch is that you can get the lot for £5.24 and still feel smug enough to go in for seconds.

The core basket includes:

  • THE PANTRY LEMON JUICE – 65p, 250ml
  • The Pantry Caster Sugar – £1.49, 1kg
  • BRITISH MEDIUM FREE RANGE EGGS 6 PACK – £1.55
  • THE PANTRY PLAIN FLOUR – 70p, 1.5kg
  • COWBELLE BRITISH WHOLE MILK – 85p, 1pt

Enough to fuel a serious flipping session without needing a second mortgage.

Where Aldi undercuts the big hitters

Aldi isn’t just whispering about value; it’s naming names and putting numbers on the board, claiming savings of up to 62% against familiar competitors.

Here’s how some of the match-ups look:

  • Lemon juice
    • Aldi: THE PANTRY LEMON JUICE – 65p, 250ml
    • M&S LEMON JUICE – £1.10, 250ml
    • PRICE DIFFERENCE: 45p, 41%
  • Caster sugar
    • Aldi: The Pantry Caster Sugar – £1.49, 1kg
    • OCADO CASTER SUGAR – £2.35, 1kg
    • PRICE DIFFERENCE: 86p, 37%
  • Free-range eggs (6 pack, medium)
    • Aldi: BRITISH MEDIUM FREE RANGE EGGS 6 PACK – £1.55
    • M&S MEDIUM FREE RANGE EGGS 6 PACK – £1.85
    • PRICE DIFFERENCE: 30p, 16%
  • Plain flour
    • Aldi: THE PANTRY PLAIN FLOUR – 70p, 1.5kg
    • MCDOUGALLS PLAIN WHITE FLOUR – £1.85, 1.5kg
    • PRICE DIFFERENCE: £1.15, 62%
  • Whole milk
    • Aldi: COWBELLE BRITISH WHOLE MILK – 85p, 1pt
    • WAITROSE ESSENTIAL WHOLE MILK – 95p, 1pt
    • PRICE DIFFERENCE: 10p, 11%

Individually those gaps might sound small, but across a Shrove Tuesday shop – and the rest of the trolley – that’s the sort of margin that adds up faster than your kids can demand “one more, please”.

Level up your Pancake Day toppings

Of course, Pancake Day isn’t just about the basics; it’s what you pile on top that turns “decent” into “dangerously moreish”. Aldi’s leaning hard into the toppings too.

To sweeten the deal, shoppers can choose from:

  • The Pantry Golden Syrup – £1.35, 750g
  • Nutoka Hazelnut Chocolate Spread – £1.65, 400g
  • Belmont Biscuit Spread – £1.75, 400g (in both ‘Smooth’ and ‘Crunchy’)

Backing up the heavy hitters are:

  • Grandessa Jams – 89p, 454g
  • Peanut Butter – 99p, 340g, again in ‘Smooth’ and ‘Crunchy’ options

In other words, if it can be drizzled, spread, spooned or “oops, I dropped half the jar on there”, Aldi probably has a version on the shelf.

No time to whisk? Go ready-made

Not everyone wants to stand over the hob flipping batter like they’re auditioning for MasterChef. For the “rip open, heat up, tuck in” crowd, Aldi has a bench full of premade options ready to go:

  • Dessert Menu American Pancakes – £2.09, 6 pack
  • Dessert Menu Sweet Pancakes – £1.95, 8 pack
  • Dessert Menu Chocolate Protein Pancakes – £1.99, 160g
  • Specially Selected Giant Pancakes – £1.59, 4 pack

So whether you’re carb-loading for a morning run or just trying to get the kids fed before the school run, you can still say you “did Pancake Day” without dirtying every pan you own.

Pancake Sushi Bites: when Shrove Tuesday goes rogue

Sushi-Pancake Bites Aldi

For those who think the traditional lemon-and-sugar routine is a bit vanilla, Aldi’s pushing a more playful idea: Pancake Sushi Bites.

The concept is simple enough: thin pancakes, bananas, spreads and a bit of biscuit crunch, rolled up like sushi and sliced into bite-sized rounds. It’s the sort of thing that looks wildly impressive on Instagram and suspiciously easy on the washing-up.

Ingredients

  • 1 Egg
  • 150ml Milk
  • 70g Plain Flour
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 4 Bananas
  • 4 tbsp Chocolate or Biscuit Spread
  • 8 Caramelised Biscuits, crushed
  • 4 tsp Toffee Sauce or Golden Syrup

Method

  1. Beat the milk and egg together, then gradually add to the flour to make a smooth batter.
  2. Gently heat a little butter in a large frying pan.
  3. Pour a quarter of the batter into the pan and swirl to create a thin pancake.
  4. Cook on each side for 30–60 seconds until golden, repeating until all the batter is used.
  5. Spread a tablespoon of chocolate or biscuit spread over each pancake.
  6. Place a banana along one edge and roll the pancake up around it.
  7. Drizzle a tablespoon of toffee sauce or golden syrup over each roll, then roll in the crushed biscuit crumbs.
  8. Slice into 1-inch chunks and serve like sweet little maki rolls.

It’s Shrove Tuesday meets sushi bar – and probably the only time you’ll be delighted to see your kids double-dipping in “soy sauce” (which is, mercifully, syrup).

With prices trimmed, toppings loaded and even the odd novelty recipe in play, Aldi is clearly angling to be frontrunner for your frying pan this Shrove Tuesday.

Aldi’s range of Pancake Day essentials are available in stores now.
