Usain Bolt Named ‘Ultimate Legend’ as New World Athletics Era Begins

Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt has never been one to stroll quietly into a room, and he certainly isn’t starting now. The Jamaican sprint superstar has been unveiled as the first-ever ‘Ultimate Legend’ of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, set to make its debut in Budapest from September 11–13, 2026.

For a sport forever chasing its next thunderclap moment, putting Bolt at the front of the parade feels about right. After all, this is the man who rewrote sprinting’s rulebook, collected 19 senior global titles, and delivered enough iconic moments to keep athletics highlight reels stocked until the next century.

Now, Bolt isn’t just part of the story—he’s helping write the next chapter.

A New Kind of Showdown

The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is designed to be track and field’s season-ending prize fight: the very best athletes on the planet, head-to-head, with bragging rights and big money on the line.

“The idea behind the World Athletics Ultimate Championship is brilliant: the absolute best of the best facing off against each other – all the major global stars, big money, even bigger personalities, no excuses – to see who gets bragging rights as the Ultimate Champion. Let’s just say I would have loved to be competing in this box-office championship,” said Bolt.

This won’t be your garden-variety meet. Olympic champions, world champions, Diamond League winners, and the season’s best performers will collide over three sessions at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre.

Twenty-six athletes are already guaranteed their spots as reigning Olympic champions, with more to be added after next year’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo—a stage Bolt himself will attend as a guest.

Bolt’s New Role

In his role as Ultimate Legend, Bolt will be the face of the event, working with World Athletics to ensure this isn’t just another entry on the sporting calendar. It’s the first time the eight-time Olympic champion has stepped into an ambassadorial role of this scale.

“I’m honoured to take on the role of Ultimate Legend to help spread the word, as athletics remains a huge part of my life. I saw our sport go through many changes during my time on the track and it’s important that athletics continues to innovate. This new global championship will help to showcase and grow track and field and its incredible stars.”

Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, didn’t mince words when summing up Bolt’s impact.

“The title of Ultimate Legend is fitting for one of the true icons of our sport,” said Coe. “Usain transcends athletics. He continues to elevate the profile of the sport and inspire athletes around the globe, proving what is possible – on and off the field of play.

As we look forward – developing new ways to showcase the sport and discovering new stars – it is important to also look back and recognise the trailblazers who have paved the way and captured the imaginations of generations of athletics fans.”

Budapest Gears Up

Hungary, already seasoned in staging big-time athletics after the 2023 World Championships, is rolling out the red carpet again.

Dr. Ádám Schmidt, Hungary’s Secretary of State for Sports, said: “Similar to other major international sporting events in Hungary, one of our main goals with hosting the Ultimate Championship is to ensure that by watching the fantastic competitions of the very best athletes live, as many of our compatriots as possible can gain experiences that will inspire them to commit to regular sports themselves.

“It is a great pleasure and honour for us that the best of the best will visit us, not only on the track, but also beyond it. Usain Bolt is a special figure of the athletics family who can inspire young people all over the world. I am confident that with his help, the Ultimate Championship will be just as successful and popular as the 2023 World Championships in Budapest were.”

From Icon to Architect

For athletics, this event is more than a season finale—it’s a reinvention. The Ultimate Championship ensures every year builds to a crescendo with stakes that athletes, fans, and broadcasters can all rally around.

And if you’re going to build something with that much ambition, you may as well ask Usain Bolt to light the torch. The man once defined speed; now, he may just help define the future of his sport.
