Run for Research, Walk for Wellbeing: The 5K Challenge Goes National

Esmée Gummer x realbuzz

If you’ve ever needed a nudge to get moving, consider this your friendly shove from the universe in a decent pair of trainers. The Nation’s 5K Challenge has just unveiled its headline charity partners—Wings for Life and Sport In Mind—as it sets its sights on a gloriously ambitious target: getting one million people moving across the UK in 2026.

The nationwide movement will be led by endurance athlete and fitness coach Esmée Gummer, and it’s built to welcome everyone—whether you run like the wind, jog like you’re late for the bus, or walk like you’re out for a well-earned head-clear. The challenge runs 27 June to 3 October 2026, and the ask is beautifully simple: complete an inclusive 5K, your way.

A touring 5K roadshow, starting in Scotland

As part of the campaign, Gummer will travel across the UK hosting accessible, community-led 5K events designed to bring people together through movement—less “intimidating start line,” more “come as you are.”

Sign-ups are now open for the first 10 free 5K events, starting in Scotland, via the realbuzz website, with more locations and dates to follow.

And yes, it’s meant to feel doable—because the real victory here isn’t a finishing time, it’s the fact you showed up.

A fundraising model that spreads the good

Here’s where The Nation’s 5K Challenge gets clever. The fundraising is powered by GoFundMe, and the pot is divided like this:

  • 25% of total funds raised goes to Wings for Life
  • 25% goes to Sport In Mind
  • The remaining 50% is distributed to other nominated charities—chosen through a public vote by participants during the challenge

So the two headline partners get guaranteed impact, while participants help steer funding to causes that matter in their own communities. It’s national, but it doesn’t forget to be personal.

“Powered by the community, for the community”

“This challenge is about people, purpose and possibility,” said Esmée Gummer. “Wings for Life and Sport In Mind represent causes that are incredibly close to my heart and I’m so proud to have them as headline partners. What makes this even more exciting is that the public will help decide where the remaining funds go. It’s a challenge powered by the community, for the community.”

Gummer’s connection to Wings for Life runs deeper than a logo on a banner. Wings for Life funds research into spinal cord injury, and Gummer’s own journey is a living reminder of what resilience looks like when it rolls up its sleeves and gets on with it. She was paralysed at 18, taught herself to walk again, and went on to compete in multiple endurance events—now using her platform as a realbuzz ambassador to champion charity running and inclusive participation.

Wings for Life: research with a finish line in mind

Emma Hind, Wings for Life UK CEO said: “We’re incredibly proud to be named a headline charity partner for The Nation’s 5K Challenge. Esmée’s story powerfully reflects why our work matters and this partnership will help fund vital research to find a cure for spinal cord injury. The scale and inclusivity of this challenge make it truly special.”

In other words: this is movement with meaning—and money aimed squarely at science that can change lives.

Sport In Mind: mental health support through movement

Sport In Mind, the UK’s leading mental health sports charity, will use funds raised to expand its support for adults and young people experiencing mental health problems through sport and physical activity—because sometimes the most powerful therapy begins with simply getting out the door.

Samantha Rosier, Senior Fundraising Manager for Sport In Mind said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have been selected as a headline charity partner. Sport in Mind was founded on the belief that sport and physical activity can change lives and this partnership reflects that shared commitment. Together, we can reach more people experiencing mental health problems and support them to improve their wellbeing through the power of movement.”

For anyone who’s ever felt their head get lighter after a walk, that message lands with the force of common sense—and a bit of hope.

realbuzz and GoFundMe: making it easy to join, donate and vote

The challenge is supported by realbuzz, which will handle event registrations, charity partnerships and donations alongside GoFundMe—designed to keep the barriers low and the impact high.

Nina Sethi, Head of Brand and Marketing at realbuzz, said: “The Nation’s 5K Challenge is about breaking down barriers to participation while maximising charitable impact. Announcing Wings for Life and Sport In Mind as headline charity partners is a major milestone and opening sign-ups for our first free 5K events marks the next exciting step.”

John Coventry, Senior Vice President at GoFundMe, said: “Esmée’s mission to use her platform to drive profile fundraising aligns perfectly with what GoFundMe was built to do. Bringing together digital platforms, running and good causes, this is a perfect partnership – and we wish her and everyone taking part the best of luck with the challenge.”

Between the community events, the voting element, and the fundraising split, The Nation’s 5K Challenge is aiming to turn a simple 5K into a moving, rolling wave of participation across the country—no stopwatch required.
