The spring waters of Terme di Saturnia have gushed from the centre of the earth for more than 3,000 years.
Flowing at 500 litres per second from underground at a constant temperature of 37.5°C, it replenishes the Resort’s pools naturally every four hours.
The water makes a 40-year journey underground, gathering power and energy, before rushing up into the Natural Hot Spring Pool at the centre of the Resort.
Centurions and soldiers, Popes and farmers have all bathed here over the centuries.
How Terme di Saturnia natural spring is naturally formed:
Raindrops fall on the slopes of Mount Amiata, the water filters through the ground and fissures of rock; this is the start of a long journey of the source which continues for 40 years underground, gathering power and energy on its way.
It gushes to the surface at 500 litres per second, enriched with minerals, into the Natural Hot Spring at the centre of the Resort.
Travelling at such force it replenishes the pool many times each day. It continues to rush, into the Hot Spring Pools next to the Resort, coursing through five pools, forming water jets and torrents.
From there it flows nearly two kilometres through the meadows of Saturnia to eventually burst out into the limestone and form the iconic waterfalls.
As the water descends, it cools down and the sulphur crystalizes, thus rendering the water brighter and purer and giving it a celestial colour due to the presence of crystallized sulphur.
