When it comes to the sexiest scents, attraction appears to be less about shouting across the room and more about arriving quietly, then refusing to be forgotten. A large fragrance survey has revealed the perfume and aftershave notes men and women are most drawn to — and the results suggest our noses may be running the show more often than we care to admit.
Scent has always had a curious little seat at the table of attraction. It lingers on a collar, sneaks into memory, and can make someone seem instantly polished, warm, fresh, mysterious or, occasionally, like they’ve been mugged by a duty-free counter.
Using popular fragrance data from Fragrantica, alongside survey responses from 3,978 men and 3,743 women, the findings point to a clear split: men lean towards floral, sweet and fruity notes on women, while women favour woody, aromatic and spicy notes on men.
Floral Perfumes Come Out On Top For Women

For women’s fragrances, floral notes were voted the most attractive by men, with 85% choosing them as their favourite aroma.
That will not shock anyone who has ever walked past a good floral perfume and immediately forgotten what they were doing. Floral notes can be soft, clean, romantic and expensive-smelling without needing to announce themselves with a brass band.
Among the most popular floral fragrances listed by Fragrantica were My Way by Giorgio Armani, Narciso Eau de Parfum Ambrée by Narciso Rodriguez, and La Vie Est Belle Intensément by Lancôme.
There is a reason floral perfumes keep surviving trend cycles. They are the white shirt of fragrance: reliable, flattering, and rarely out of place.
Sweet And Fruity Notes Still Have Pulling Power

Sweet scents ranked second among men, with 81% naming them as a favourite. Done well, sweetness gives a fragrance warmth and charm. Done badly, it smells like someone has fallen headfirst into a pick-and-mix.
Popular sweet fragrances included La Vie Est Belle Intensément by Lancôme, La Nuit Trésor Nude by Lancôme, and Angel Eau Croisière 2020 by Mugler.
Fruity notes finished third, attracting 78% of the male vote. These scents often bring brightness and energy, particularly when blended with florals, musk or vanilla. The most popular fruity fragrances included La Vie Est Belle Intensément by Lancôme, Angel Eau Croisière 2020 by Mugler, and Angel Nova by Mugler.
Vanilla And Citrus Complete The Top Five
Vanilla ranked fourth, with 73% of men voting for it as a favourite scent on women. It is creamy, warm and familiar — the fragrance equivalent of good lighting and a decent bottle of red.
Vanilla notes appeared in La Vie Est Belle Intensément by Lancôme, La Nuit Trésor Nude by Lancôme, and The Only One Eau de Parfum Intense by Dolce & Gabbana.
Citrus came fifth, with 69% of men preferring its zesty freshness. Citrus can sharpen a perfume beautifully, cutting through heavier notes and adding that just-showered, got-my-life-together impression.
Popular citrus-led or citrus-featured fragrances included My Way by Giorgio Armani, Miss Dior Rose N’Roses by Christian Dior, and La Nuit Trésor Nude by Lancôme.
Woody Aftershaves Lead The Way For Men
For men’s fragrances, woody notes topped the list, with 86% of women voting them the most sensual scent.
This one makes sense. Woody fragrances tend to suggest warmth, steadiness and a certain outdoorsy confidence. Not “I wrestle bears at weekends” confidence, necessarily, but more “I own a coat that fits properly” confidence.
The most popular woody fragrances listed by Fragrantica included Dior Homme 2020 by Christian Dior, Beau De Jour Eau de Parfum by Tom Ford, and Acqua di Giò Profondo by Giorgio Armani.
Woody notes are often built around cedar, sandalwood, vetiver or patchouli, giving aftershaves structure and staying power. They sit close to the skin, which is rather the point.
Aromatic And Spicy Notes Make A Strong Case
Aromatic notes came second, with 78% of women voting for them. These scents often feel fresh, herbal and clean, with notes such as lavender, sage, rosemary or basil lending a crisp, masculine edge.
Popular aromatic fragrances included Dior Homme 2020 by Christian Dior, Beau De Jour Eau de Parfum by Tom Ford, and Acqua di Giò Profondo by Giorgio Armani.
Warm spice finished third with 72% of the vote. These are the scents that bring depth: cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, pepper and resinous warmth. They can make a fragrance feel more intimate, especially in colder months or evening settings.
Fragrances featuring warm spice included Pasha de Cartier Parfum by Cartier, Le Male Le Parfum by Jean Paul Gaultier, and Interlude Black Iris Man by Amouage.
Fresh spice ranked fourth, with 64% of women choosing it as a favourite. This gives men’s fragrance a sharper, cleaner energy — less fireside armchair, more crisp shirt and decent haircut.
Popular fresh spicy fragrances included Beau De Jour Eau de Parfum by Tom Ford, Acqua di Giò Profondo by Giorgio Armani, and Pasha de Cartier Parfum by Cartier.
Citrus Still Works For Men Too
Citrus took fifth place for men, with 57% of women voting for it. It is not the loudest note in the room, but it remains one of the most useful.
Citrus gives aftershave lift, freshness and approachability. It works particularly well for daytime wear, summer, work settings, and anyone who wants to smell good without leaving a vapour trail across three postcodes.
Popular citrus fragrances included Dior Homme 2020 by Christian Dior, Acqua di Giò Profondo by Giorgio Armani, and L’Homme Rochas by Rochas.
What The Findings Really Tell Us
The sexiest scents are not always the loudest, rarest or most expensive. The winners here are familiar fragrance families with broad appeal: floral, sweet, fruity and vanilla for women; woody, aromatic, spicy and citrus for men.
That does not mean everyone should sprint towards the same bottle. Skin chemistry matters. So does season, setting, taste and how heavily someone applies it. A brilliant fragrance worn with all the restraint of a crop-duster is no longer seductive. It is a public health incident.
The smarter lesson is to choose notes that suit the occasion.
Florals and citrus work beautifully for daytime polish. Vanilla and sweet notes add warmth for evenings. Woody and aromatic scents offer clean confidence. Spice brings interest, character and a little danger — ideally the charming sort, not the “he owns six snakes” sort.
The Verdict: Attraction Has A Nose For Balance
This survey suggests the most attractive fragrance notes are the ones that strike a balance between personality and restraint. A scent should leave an impression, not a warning.
For women, floral perfumes remain the front-runner, with sweetness, fruit, vanilla and citrus giving the top five a polished, wearable shape. For men, woody aftershaves dominate, followed by aromatic freshness and spice.
In other words, the best fragrance does not need to perform cartwheels. It just needs to sit well on the skin, suit the person wearing it, and make someone nearby think, even briefly: goodness, that works.
