Seagulls vs Eagles: 50 Miles, Zero Love

Crystal Palace vs Brighton 2025

The Premier League is packed with huge rivalries – Man United vs Liverpool, Arsenal vs Tottenham, Newcastle vs Sunderland. But there is one that is equal in stature and a feud that’s fiery with the fans – Crystal Palace vs Brighton! Two established Premier League sides, decades of grudges, and a very unique rivalry.

The M23 Derby, the Eagles vs the Seagulls! Despite the 50-mile gap between the clubs, it all kicked off in the 70’s when managers Terry Venables and Alan Mullery turned an FA Cup clash into pure chaos. Across a fiery trilogy of games, managers bickered, fans fumed and Mullery’s insult to the Palace supporters sealed the deal.

Fast forward to 2013 and the Championship play-off semi-final proved pivotal. Wilfried Zaha’s goals helped lift Palace into the Premier League, where they have been ever since. Brighton joined them in the top flight in 2017, and since then Palace hold the edge in the head-to-head with five wins to four and seven draws.

The latest clash at Selhurst Park ended 0‑0, adding yet another draw to the record, now totalling eight.

The game began with a respectful and moving Remembrance Sunday tribute. Both sets of fans paused and ‘The Last Post’ was played beautifully. The derby buzz was immediate and the game was end-to-end action, a really absorbing watch.

Palace fans had their chance for a cheeky dig at Brighton with “Have you ever seen Brighton win the cup?” referring to their recent FA Cup triumph! Brighton thought they’d won a penalty, only for VAR to overturn it and Georginio Rutter was subsequently booked for diving. There were lots of chances throughout but saves from both goalkeepers kept the points shared.

It was nail-biting throughout and both teams had the opportunity to take all three points.

Even in 2025, the rivalry still sparks debate. “Why are they rivals?” “I don’t get it!” “That’s such a weird derby!”

Speaking to fans ahead of the game, one supporter said, “It’s nice to add a bit of spice to our games.” A young fan proudly explained, “I just can’t stand Brighton and we don’t like them because I think the managers had a fight years ago!”

And for a Palace fan living in Brighton? “At least it’ll be peaceful next week, and I can still remind my mates we won the FA Cup!”
