Great North Swim 2026 Is Back — Are You In?

Lake Windermere Swimmers

The Great North Swim doesn’t really do “a nice little dip.” It does spectacle. It does butterflies-in-the-stomach start lines. It does that very British mix of nerves, banter and neoprene, all framed by the Lake District’s stunning scenery that looks like it’s been styled for a glossy spread. The Great North Swim returns to Lake Windermere from 12–14 June 2026 for its 19th edition, and entries are now open.

This is the sort of weekend swimmers talk about in winter — not in a motivational-poster way, but in a “right then, we’re doing it” way. Because open water has a habit of sharpening the senses and trimming the nonsense. You can’t fake it in a lake.

A festival, a challenge, a very good excuse

In 2025, “more than 7,500 swimmers and 20,000 spectators travelled from across the country” for the event, which tells you everything you need to know about its pull. You’re not just turning up for a swim; you’re stepping into a weekend that feels like a celebration of the sport — part endurance test, part social scene, part lakeside daydream with a sting in the tail.

And yes, the views are exactly what you’re hoping for: “Iconic Lake District views across Lake Windermere.” The lake will look friendly from the shore, of course. Lakes always do. Then you get in, and it starts negotiating.

Pick your distance, pick your mood

One of the reasons the Great North Swim works is that it isn’t built for one type of swimmer. It’s built for the whole tribe — from the brave first-timer to the person who turns up quietly fast and leaves with a medal and a mildly terrifying time.

Distances run “from an accessible 250m right through to a demanding 10k.” That range matters. It means this can be:

  • your first proper open water challenge (250m)
  • a step-up goal you train towards all spring
  • or the full-fat option (10k) that makes the post-swim chips taste like a Michelin moment

The inclusive bit isn’t just marketing

Some events say they’re welcoming. This one backs it with numbers and set-up: “a supportive, inclusive community for all abilities,” plus the kind of atmosphere that makes nervous swimmers feel like they belong.

It’s also “family-friendly too,” with children “from just eight years old” able to take part — which is rare in open water at this scale. It means families can train, travel, swim and celebrate together, and everyone gets their own finish-line story to dine out on for months.

What you’re actually signing up for

Organisers say swimmers can expect:

  • “A vibrant, festival-style event atmosphere”
  • “Iconic Lake District views across Lake Windermere”
  • “A supportive, inclusive community for all abilities”
  • “A true sense of achievement at every distance”

That last line is the quiet truth of it. Whether you come for the 250m or the 10k, you leave with the same thing: a little more confidence, a slightly bigger appetite, and the smug satisfaction of having done something properly.

The Great North Swim 2026 takes place 12–14 June 2026 at Lake Windermere. Entries are now open via greatswim.org/great-north-swim.
