Cage The Elephant will play Munich as the Patriots face the Lions, part of the NFL’s record seven-show international music programme.
The Cage The Elephant NFL Munich halftime show will place one of America’s most established modern rock bands at the centre of the league’s expanding international programme, as the New England Patriots face the Detroit Lions at the FC Bayern Munich Arena on 15 November.
For Cage The Elephant, who have played extensively in Germany, the setting will be familiar; the format rather less so. Halftime offers little room for gradual persuasion, with a stadium audience and live television demanding an immediate impression.
Why Cage The Elephant fit Munich
There is a certain logic to the booking. Munich has already hosted NFL regular-season games in 2022 and 2024, while Germany’s appetite for both American football and loud guitars requires little explanation.
Cage The Elephant arrive with useful stadium credentials. The band have accumulated more than 10 billion streams, scored 13 number-one records on Alternative radio and toured the United States as special guests on Oasis Live ’25. A halftime slot, though, is a peculiar discipline: fewer songs, less room to build, no chance to hide behind a 20-minute guitar solo and hope everyone comes round eventually.
Matt Shultz appears to understand the assignment.
“We have played a lot of shows in Germany over the years and the crowds here have always given us everything they have,” said Matt Shultz of Cage The Elephant. “Playing a halftime show is a completely different animal — you get one shot in front of a stadium and a global audience, and you have to make every second count. We are going to bring the same energy we bring to our own shows and we cannot wait.”
A one-shot set inside Patriots-Lions
The game itself brings together the New England Patriots and Detroit Lions, but the halftime performance has been given its own international billing. Cage The Elephant’s full set will be shown live in Germany free-to-air on RTL and on Sky Sport.
That matters because NFL halftime entertainment is increasingly being treated as more than something to occupy the interval while everybody locates another drink. In Munich, the band will be performing to a stadium crowd and a live broadcast audience, with the compressed format placing a premium on immediacy.
For a group known for high-energy live shows, subtlety is unlikely to be the main tactical concern.
The NFL is building a seven-show international music programme
Munich is one stop in a record run of seven halftime shows across the 2026 NFL International Games, presented by American Express and spread across seven countries and four continents.
The previously confirmed performers underline how broadly the league is pitching the idea. Jonas Brothers are due to play the Melbourne game on 10 September, Pedro Sampaio and Ricky Martin are booked for Rio on 27 September, Ayra Starr will perform in London on 11 October, and The Warning are set for Mexico City on 22 November.
Cage The Elephant give the Munich date a different texture. The choice leans into rock rather than trying to force the same musical identity onto every market, which is a more interesting strategy than simply transporting one generic halftime template around the world.
Munich remains central to the NFL’s overseas expansion
The 2026 fixture will be Munich’s third regular-season NFL game. Another is already scheduled for 2028 under the league’s multi-year agreement with FC Bayern Munich and the City of Munich.
Across its international history, the NFL has staged 62 regular-season games outside the United States. London, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Madrid, Dublin, São Paulo, Mexico City and Toronto have all hosted, while the 2026 calendar adds new markets including Melbourne, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.
The scale is no longer experimental. The league is building repeat stops, local audiences and recognisable event traditions around its overseas fixtures. Music is becoming part of that architecture.

For Cage The Elephant, the task is considerably simpler to describe than to execute: walk into a football stadium, seize a few minutes in the middle of an NFL game and leave before anyone has time to check the set list.
