Avani+ Barbarons Seychelles Resort is making waves—quite literally—with the launch of its new freediving experiences, created in partnership with Sophie Walsh (née Perolari), the nation’s first certified freediving instructor and a freshly minted record-breaker.
Walsh, who recently set three national records at the AIDA July Blue Freediving Competition in Egypt, including a 63-metre personal best, is bringing her passion for the deep blue to the resort’s guests.
As the founder of Freediving Seychelles, Walsh isn’t just about chasing metres. She’s about opening up the underwater world to anyone willing to take a deep breath and trust the ocean.
“Freediving is about much more than depth, it’s about stillness, connection and discovering what the body and mind are capable of when working in harmony with the ocean,” she said. “I’m delighted to bring these experiences to Avani+ Barbarons and to share this unique way of exploring Seychelles with guests of all ages.”
From Poolside to Open Ocean

The freediving packages at Avani+ Barbarons Seychelles Resort are designed for every level of water lover, whether you’re a nervous toe-dipper or already half-mermaid.
Guests can start in the safety of the pool before moving into the open ocean, with a highlight being a full-day boat excursion to Beau Vallon. There, divers can test their lungs at two stunning sites: Baie Ternay Marine Park and the unspoiled Lilo’t Island.
Small-group sessions mean there’s no “tourist factory” vibe. Instead, participants get proper training, use of equipment, and the chance to earn an internationally recognised AIDA Level 1 Certificate.
Kids aren’t left out, either—junior courses begin at age seven, mixing water safety with confidence-building underwater games. Young divers can even bag a Dolphin Freediving Certificate, which beats another sandcastle badge any day.
More Than Just a Holiday Dip
Set against Mahé’s impossibly turquoise backdrop, the freediving programme offers more than bragging rights for Instagram. It’s about connection—learning to slow down, listen to your body, and let the ocean do the teaching.
Available year-round, the packages add a new dimension to the Avani+ Barbarons Seychelles Resort experience, turning a beach break into something genuinely unforgettable.
