When it comes to online abuse, Olympic and Paralympic athletes have taken more hits off the field than any of us would stomach. UK Sport has finally had enough: online abuse is now firmly in its crosshairs with the launch of a ground-breaking protection system designed to stop the bile before it ever reaches an athlete’s screen.
In a move that feels long overdue — and unmistakably decisive — the organisation has unveiled Social Protect, an AI-powered app that deletes abusive comments in real time. Not in theory. Not after a week of “review”. In real time. Before the venom has a chance to sting.
Funded by a significant six-figure investment for the LA 2028 cycle, the move marks the first time in British sport that athletes have had round-the-clock digital protection built directly into their daily toolkit. It’s no bolt-on gimmick either; the system emerged only after a fierce competitive tender and a meticulous review process. In short: UK Sport wanted a solution that worked, so they went out and found it.
A Safety Net Built for Reality, Not PR
At its core, Social Protect gives sports and athletes the control they’ve needed for years. The platform works seamlessly across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Discord and YouTube, scrubbing out abusive content in under a second using a customisable database of more than two million harmful phrases in over 100 languages. That’s an entire dictionary of vitriol rendered harmless before breakfast.
For athletes constantly ping-ponging between training, travel and competition, the appeal is obvious: a quieter mental space, a cleaner feed, and a rare moment of online peace.
Three-time Team GB badminton Olympian Kirsty Gilmour didn’t mince her words about life before this system existed.
“In the last six years, I have noticed a real increase in the abuse I’ve been receiving on social media.
“Reading abusive comments at the wrong time can cause a lot of damage. I have come straight off the court, debriefed with my coach, reached for my phone and received a death threat. The comments that hurt me most are the ones that target me and my career personally.”
For her, Social Protect has already changed the game: “Social Protect feels like a real step up in terms of the level of control I can take over my experiences online. Getting set up on the app is so easy and comments disappear in real time – I can choose whether to see them or not. It feels empowering and like a real force field over my little corner of the internet.
“I’m really impressed with how UK Sport have become the trailblazers for putting this safety net in place for athletes.”
A Line in the Sand
UK Sport’s Director of Performance and People, Dr Kate Baker, didn’t sugar-coat the situation either.
“The level of abuse our athletes are facing online is unacceptable – to do nothing about this is not an option.
“Our partnership with Social Protect shields athletes from abuse to an extent never before seen in British sport and we are fiercely proud to be pioneering in this space.
“Social Protect are world leaders in creating safe digital spaces and their cutting-edge technology ensures that our athletes are protected – not just at Games time, but all the time.
“This is a significant investment for UK Sport and sits right at the heart of our commitment to ensure athletes have the right support to be the best versions of themselves on and off the field of play.”
It isn’t just athletes who stand to benefit. UK-hosted major sporting events funded by UK Sport can also use Social Protect to keep official channels clean, cutting out harassment at scale before it festers.
How It Works — And Why It Matters Now
Picture an automated digital goalkeeper with world-class reflexes: every abusive comment gets booted away before an athlete even logs in. No theatrics. No appeals process. Just a ruthless, silent purge of the rubbish that has dogged elite sport for too long.
Social Protect CEO Shane Britten summed it up bluntly: “Abuse is abuse, whether it happens on the field or in a comment section. We built Social Protect to give people control over their own digital boundaries and to stop harmful content before it ever reaches them.”
“We are delighted to be partnering with UK Sport and protecting the nation’s top athletes. UK Sport is truly leading the way. They studied the problem and came to us for a real solution: to protect their athletes. We’re protecting their athletes around the clock, taking social media abuse off their plates and placing a protective bubble around them and their families so they can stay focused on what they do best — performing at the highest level.”
A Forward Step That Doesn’t Pretend the Past Didn’t Happen
Athletes have carried the weight of online hostility for far too long. This initiative doesn’t erase that history — but it does finally acknowledge it, and it puts proper muscle behind the promise of change. With LA 2028 looming on the horizon, British sport is planting its flag: no more looking the other way.
This is protection athletes should have always had. Now they do.
