Having oily or blemish-prone skin can be extremely difficult. You never know when a blemish will appear and how long it will last.

The most important thing to do when a dreaded spot appears is to avoid touching it at all costs! Picking or irritating spots will only make them stay around for longer. This can also result in inflamed skin or even worse, an infection.

Alongside the no touching rule there are some other steps you can take to encourage a clear and healthy complexion. Make sure that your skin is thoroughly cleansed each morning and evening to ensure all impurities are wash away.

And the holy grail; the ingredients you put on to your skin are the answer to achieving your clear skin goals.

I had a chat to Aly Rahimtoola, founder of award-winning skincare brand, Herbal Essentials who has revealed the 5 ingredients which will make the all-important change in your routine, leaving you with a dewy, clear complexion.

1) Neem

Although not very well known, Neem extract is incredibly beneficial to oily or combination skin. Neem has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, helping to combat acne and reduce scarring in acne-prone skin.

Neem is also great for sensitive skin, as it helps to control excess oil without drying out your complexion. The natural herb is packed full of several skin and even hair care benefits and aids in healing wounds and sun damage. It’s also packed full of Vitamin C, smoothing out any signs of wrinkles.

2) Aloe Vera

Rich in antioxidants and minerals, Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory and cooling properties to help heal and moisturise stressed skin.

With high contents of polysaccharides and minerals, Aloe Vera is known for its softening and moisturising effects on the skin.

3) Peppermint Oil

The menthol in Peppermint has the ability to soothe and cool irritated, inflamed skin. This oil helps to control excess sebum, leaving skin looking fresher and brighter.

As well as this, Peppermint essential oil has toning, stimulating, and refreshing properties. The ingredient has Omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin A & C, calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium.

4) Hyssop

Another skincare ingredient that helps with oily and blemish-prone skin is Hyssop which belongs to the same family as mint. It carries a warm camphoraceous scent that resembles the mint and sage family.

It is a wonderful ingredient as it has natural antiseptic properties to encourage faster healing for any blemishes. Hyssop also provides natural cleansing properties that can help reduce the appearance of pores.

5) Betaine

This is a hydrating ingredient that is known to soothe and calm the skin. The anti-inflammatory properties make betaine excellent for calming acne flare-ups, redness, and irritation.

It is also good for preventing wrinkles, the moisturising properties help to soften the texture of the skin and fill in creases to reduce the appearance of fine lines.
