The first fitness competition dedicated solely to those over 50s is being held by PureGym in September, with entries now open to any senior fitness fanatics interested in winning the title of the UK’s fittest over 50.
With most fitness competitions geared towards younger entrants, and many age categories in both national and international weightlifting and athletics events ending at just 35 years old, PureGym is hosting The Over 50s Fitness Championships to demonstrate that fitness truly has no age limit and celebrate the incredible achievements made by those keeping fit over 50.
Hosted at PureGym London Swiss Cottage on Thursday 7th September 2023, the event will be open to anyone over the age of 50.
To make the competition more accessible, there is no requirement for either previous participation at other fitness-based events or to be a PureGym member, and there is no cost to enter. All people need to do is enter via the PureGym website.
Entrants will have the choice to compete in two separate events, with participants competing against those in the same age and weight category.
The first event is a test of all-out strength, with entrants competing to lift the heaviest across three big lifts (the bench press, front squat and deadlift).
The second event mixes endurance, power and mobility together in a race to the finish line across a combination of running, rowing and functional exercises that include the sled push and farmers carry.
Participants can compete in one or both of the events in an attempt to top the rankings and win prizes that include lifetime and yearlong PureGym memberships.
Stephen Rowe, Chief Marketing Officer at PureGym commented: “Providing an inclusive environment, where anyone – no matter their age – feels they can come and achieve their fitness goals is incredibly important to us.
We’re very proud to have many members consistently proving to us that age really is just a number, with individuals in their later years visiting our gyms regularly to get their workouts in, and the UK’s oldest personal trainer within our ranks too.
“With this in mind, we wanted to create an event that would celebrate those in their fifties and beyond who are already active, and inspire those who are worried they are too old to get started.
The Over 50s Fitness Championships are the perfect way to celebrate the fact that fitness truly has no age. This will be a fantastic opportunity for anyone over the age of 50 who want to challenge themselves and compete in a space dedicated to those who may be aged out of other competitions. We wish all entrants luck and can’t wait to see everyone competing on the day!”
