Kim Kardashian is known for stealing the headlines, but after this year’s Met Gala, it was her drastic weight loss that was the main talking point.
The star has been criticised for her extreme and dangerous dieting to fit into the iconic Marilyn dress, dropping 16lbs in three weeks, with the star sharing across social media that she’s been ‘starving’ throughout the process.
PT experts at Origym reveal how ‘dangerous’ losing weight this quickly is so others don’t follow the star’s lead.
PT & nutritional experts offer a word of warning
The Kardashian told Vogue that she went on a ruthlessly strict diet in order to slim down and wear the iconic dress, admitting that she hadn’t eaten ‘carbs and sugar in three weeks.’
She said: “I had this idea to put it on and to try it on, and they came with armed guards and gloves. I tried it on and it didn’t fit me, and so I looked at them and said give me like three weeks, and I had to lose 16lbs, down today, to be able to fit this.
“It was such a challenge, it was like a role, I was determined to fit it.”
Losing this much weight over a short time will have likely done damage to her body as Luke Hughes, a Level 4 personal trainer at Origym explains: “Severely restricting calories for a long period of time can lead to nutrient deficiencies.
This can result in a range of problems, including brittle hair and nails, extreme fatigue, weakened bones, hair loss, and osteoporosis.”
“Rapidly losing weight too quickly can put considerable stress on the body. Developing an obsession with weight can have a negative effect on your mental health and may result in more dangerous mental conditions such as eating disorders and body dysmorphia.
“It’s always better to lose weight or build muscle over a long period of time, by eating healthily and having plenty of rest in between workouts.”
“I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein. I didn’t starve myself, but I was so strict,”
Kim Kardashian on her drastic weight loss
Post-Gala, Kim took to her Instagram story to say she was “starving” and showed that she had mini doughnuts and pizzas delivered to her hotel room. She revealed: “I haven’t had carbs or sugar in almost a month. Definitely three weeks. I’m so excited!”
Luke says: “Rapid weight loss and severe calorie restriction can result in digestive problems like constipation and low immunity to illnesses.
Women who severely limit their calories may find they stop having periods, which can lead to fertility issues if this is continued for a long amount of time.”
PT experts recommend ‘safe’ way to drop pounds
Luke says: “Losing 1-2 pounds per week is considered a healthy and safe rate to lose weight. However, any more than this in the same amount of time may be considered too fast.
“Fast weight loss can put you at risk of health problems, including muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies, gallstones, and a drop in metabolism.
Other health-related issues include shedding more hair than usual, feeling cold and irritable, having reduced energy levels, and women may find they stop having periods.
“This often occurs when people exercise too much or attempt ‘crash’ or low-calorie diets. If you lose weight too quickly, it’s also unlikely you will keep it off permanently.”
