As a new year rolls around, many people will be keen to start new fitness goals for 2022. While for some, this will involve joining a gym, for others, gym anxiety stands in the way.
This year, UK’s PureGym is searching for ‘Gym Testers’, where two lucky individuals will receive £300 each to workout in return for offering valuable insights on how to make the gym less intimidating for new members.
While member feedback is already used by PureGym to make the gym experience better, this initiative will help to further shed light on the challenges new members face when joining a gym, so that these can be tackled by the gym chain.
Previous research by PureGym found that 50% of non-gym members find the idea of visiting the gym scary, and 1 in 3 (39%) of gym users have cancelled their membership due to a lack of confidence in using the facilities.
To help combat this, they are searching for two current non-gym users who can provide real-life feedback on how to improve the gym experience, so that more people can enjoy the benefits of being active.
In return, each ‘Gym Tester’ will be rewarded with £300 and provided with a free six-month PureGym Plus membership to use the gym as they please, with visits able to be made around the tester’s main job, studies, school runs or even while they enjoy retirement.

The PureGym ‘Gym Tester’ Tasks
- Download and use the PureGym app to enter the gym
- Use the support available to help you get started at your gym
- Visit the gym a minimum of eight times, including trying two fitness classes
- Rate each visit across several criteria, including gym layout, equipment, and atmosphere
Applications are now open to UK residents aged 18 and over, and those that want to get money for ticking off a popular New Year’s resolution can simply apply via the PureGym website, stating why they would make a ‘perfect’ Gym Tester. The closing date for all applicants is on Sunday 30th January 2022.
