While the mass participation industry has struggled to recover following the Covid-19 pandemic, Tough Mudder UK’s end-of-season report has shown good signs that demand for mass participation is on the mend with a 14% participant growth in 2022.
Breaking last year’s tally, Tough Mudder UK brought in almost 100,000 participants across their 10-event season, as the iconic obstacle racing brand hosted sell-out events across the UK.
In a year where the brand encouraged participants to take on challenges like never before, it’s estimated that a collective 2.3 million obstacles were overcome while on the course, all while only losing a recorded 56 shoes along the way…
It seems the mud-infused, adventure-packed events were exactly what the UK wanted, with popularity rising by 13,000 participants from last year. Interestingly too is the number of new arrivals, with 23% of ticket purchases being first timers, up 14,000 year on year.
With participants around the country covering a collective 416,000 miles, it was London South Tough Mudder that took the prize for the biggest event of the year, which hosted 14,000 participants across the September weekend.
The Introduction of the 1-mile Lidl Mudder course also proved a popular addition for the little ones as it saw a total of 5,890 children take on Lidl muddy adventures of their own.
Managing Director of Tough Mudder Europe, Matt Brooke expressed his delight: “This season has truly been one to remember! I want to thank everyone who has been part of Tough Mudder UK this year, from the participants to the operations team, from the volunteers to all of our partners – without everyone this year wouldn’t have been such a success.
Although the event season has drawn to a close, plans are in place already for an epic 2023 year where we look to smash records and get people active – we look forward to seeing you at the startline soon!”
Tough Mudder will look to replicate their success next year by welcoming new and familiar faces into 2023. All details of the events can be found at https://toughmudder.co.uk/
