Everything You Need to Know About the 2025 adidas Manchester Marathon

Manchester Marathon Runners

The Manchester marathon is about to bring record-breaking excitement to the streets on Sunday, 27th April 2025.

This year’s Manchester marathon will see an astonishing 36,000 runners tackle the sold-out 26.2-mile route, cementing the day’s place in history as part of the largest day of marathon running in the UK.

While 90,000 participants overall are lacing up their shoes across the country’s two biggest marathon events in Greater Manchester and London, the city’s own iconic race promises an unforgettable atmosphere for competitors and supporters alike.

A Record-Breaking Day in Greater Manchester

On race day, a surge of participants and spectators will bring vibrant energy (and a significant economic boost) to Greater Manchester.

Organisers anticipate the event will raise millions for official and associated charities The Christie, Cancer Research UK, Alzheimer’s Society, and British Heart Foundation.

In addition, £40,000 has been pledged to local causes, including sustainability charity City of Trees and various sports initiatives across the region.

Everything You Need to Know

Route and Key Locations

The adidas Manchester Marathon route leads runners through Stretford, Sale, and Altrincham before circling back via Chorlton-Cum-Hardy and Hulme to reach a brand-new finish line on Oxford Road.

If you want a sneak peek of the action, the event’s route preview can be viewed on YouTube here, and the full route map can be found here. For further participant logistics, including wave start times, visit the Participant Hub here.

Start Times and Elite Races

This year’s male and female elite races featuring 2024 winner Adam Clarke and Melissah Gibson (who returns hoping to better her 2nd place result last year) begin at 9:00 am, with the mass field following in carefully spaced waves.

By 11:50 am, all 36,000 competitors will have crossed the start line and embarked on their 26.2-mile quest.

Assembly and Bag Drop

Marathon assembly kicks off adjacent to Manchester United FC’s Old Trafford ground, making it convenient for public transport users.

Once there, participants can access bag drop and toilet facilities, with marshals on hand to direct everyone toward the official start line under the Trafford Arch. Latest bag drop details and FAQs are available here, while relay runners can find all relevant information here.

Getting to the Start

With thousands heading into the city, participants are advised to use public transport where possible, taking advantage of local Metrolink and rail services.

Nearby Park and Ride stations at East Didsbury, Brooklands, Navigation Road, Sale Water Park, Ladywell, and Parkway provide additional options. For updates on travel throughout the day, head to the Bee Network website and follow @MCRMetrolink and @OfficialTfGM.

Pacers on Hand

Each starting wave includes dedicated adidas pacers, identified by the flags on their backs, spanning finishing times from 2:45 to 6:00 hours.

Runners aiming for specific targets can stick with these groups for motivation and pacing support. More details on pacers are available here.

Road Closures and Transport Impacts

Expect road closures in and around the adidas Manchester Marathon route, with diverted bus services and heavier traffic on any roads that remain open. It’s wise to allow extra time for journeys and stay updated on changes. Check the full list of closures here.

Water, Nutrition, and Toilets

Manchester Marathon Runners Water and HIGH5 Gel Stations

There are eight water stations along the course, each equipped with toilets. HIGH5 Energy Gel Aqua will be available at specific stations, but participants should plan any additional nutrition well in advance. A detailed station and gel distribution chart can be found on the official Route Page here.

The New Oxford Road Finish

For 2025, runners will cross the finish line on Oxford Road, set against the impressive backdrop of the University of Manchester.

Once across that line, finishers can expect an enthusiastic reception from family and friends. Plenty of local bars and restaurants will be offering special promotions all weekend—more details here.

Spectator Hotspots

Over 140,000 supporters are projected to line the streets for a roaring day of encouragement. Friends and family can find interactive maps, top viewing areas, and a downloadable Supporter and Weekend Guide on the Supporter Hub.
