Time is precious. So time spent exercising needs to be effective.

“I’m a big fan of convenient exercise,” says fitness expert Laura Williams. “Add some quick and simple exercises to your usual walk, do this regularly, and 90% of the time, you’ll get the results you’re after.”

And do we need to include the dreaded burpee? “Not necessarily,” she laughs. “In fact, you should vary your routine. So, if you’ve been doing a lot of jumping exercises to get your fitness fix, try some brisk walking or running with some park bench moves instead.”

As autumn approaches, Williams has these tips for people with limited time who are looking to retain or regain fitness…

Make the most of your outdoor time

Combine a family walk or end of a commute with a short routine. Still not sold? Outdoor exercise is proven to improve your mood, increase energy levels and boost your immune system.

Ignore your loss of mojo

Easier said than done? Not really. Easier done than said. Don’t waste time analysing why and where your mojo’s gone. Spend that energy digging out kit and making a bulletproof plan for the week instead.

Believe in your goals

This isn’t the same as believing you can achieve your goals – this is about making sure you still want those goals. For example, at the beginning of the year, your goal might have been to try a new class.

Now you’re not so bothered, but you’d like to drop a few pounds. Great! Goals are objectives you want to achieve today and they can change at any time.
