In the heart of Greater Manchester, the adidas Manchester Marathon 2024 showcased its status as Europe’s fourth-largest marathon with a record-breaking turnout.
Over 32,000 enthusiastic participants embarked on the scenic 26.2-mile journey, collectively raising an impressive £3.5 million for various charitable causes, including the Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation, and The Christie.
Underneath the iconic Trafford Arch, participants from across the globe embarked on the renowned flat course, passing by Manchester’s famed landmarks such as the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ at Manchester United, Lancashire Cricket Club, Bridgewater Hall, and the towering Beetham Tower. Notable personalities like Team GB Olympic cycling legend Dame Laura Kenny, England rugby coach Kevin Sinfield, and Love Island’s Kaz Crossley added star power to the event’s vibrant atmosphere.
Among the highlights of the marathon were the remarkable individual achievements. Adam Clarke claimed the top spot in the men’s category with a blazing time of 02:16:29, while Charlie Arnell dominated the women’s race, crossing the finish line in 02:37:14.
Bret Crossley secured victory in the wheelchair division with an impressive time of 01:50:35. The event also witnessed the setting of multiple world records, including Christian Howett’s unconventional feat of completing the marathon in Crocs in just 02:58:54.
Not to be outdone, a group of six participants, Marcus Green, Rich Bidgood, Hugh Tibbs, Nick Wright, David Mills, and James Bewley, made history by completing the fastest marathon in a six-person caterpillar costume, clocking in at 2:57:31.
Every participant who crossed the finish line received a bespoke 2024 finisher medal and an exclusive t-shirt designed by local artist Meha Hindocha.
The spirit of generosity and love was palpable throughout the event, with heartwarming moments like Craig Freestone’s surprise proposal to his girlfriend Tracey at the finish line and Christine Appleyard’s touching gesture of pushing her daughter, who suffers from haploinsufficiency syndrome and epilepsy, in a wheelchair for the final 5k.
In addition to celebrating personal triumphs, participants contributed to the community through initiatives like the eco-friendly Green Runner program, where 7% chose to donate their rewards to City of Trees, supporting environmental conservation in Greater Manchester.
Moreover, event organisers pledged a £1 donation to the Trafford Active Fund for each participant, promoting long-term sport and physical activity initiatives in the local community.
