St. George’s Park to Undergo Major Multi-Million Pound Upgrade Ahead of EURO 2028

St. George's Park

St. George’s Park upgrade is on the cusp of transforming English football’s flagship training base, with a bold three-year plan now underway.

This iconic Staffordshire facility, proudly home to England’s men’s, women’s and para squads, is about to receive significant investment designed to keep it at the pinnacle of high-performance sport.

Known affectionately as ‘SGP’, the venue has been integral to England’s rise since 2012, offering pristine pitches, cutting-edge technology and a dedicated environment for honing the country’s finest footballing talent.

Now, the ambitious SGP 2.0 project aims to reinvent that winning formula, delivering the very best in training, recovery and coaching, while remaining an invaluable resource for leading clubs and visiting athletes from across the sporting spectrum.

Although the scale of this refurbishment is expansive, three particular areas will see the most significant changes.

Firstly, playing surfaces used by all England teams are to be modernised for optimal performance in adverse weather, complemented by new pitchside buildings, updated performance facilities and state-of-the-art recovery spaces.

Secondly, there will be a greater focus on players’ and coaches’ wellbeing, with hotel bedrooms, communal areas and downtime spaces overhauled to meet modern expectations and ensure an inclusive environment.

Finally, an emphasis on innovation will see the creation of inspirational learning zones, providing everyone from staff to visiting teams with dynamic spaces in which to share ideas and drive creativity.

John McDermott, The FA’s men’s technical director, believes the project arrives at a pivotal moment, especially with the excitement of a home Euros around the corner.

He says the redevelopment will help England’s elite prepare in the finest surroundings, ensuring they can concentrate on performing at their peak.

Meanwhile, women’s technical director Kay Cossington highlights the importance of designing facilities that cater to a diverse range of needs, emphasising that inclusivity and accessibility stand at the heart of SGP 2.0.

For para performance head Catherine Gilby, this endeavour signals a major leap forward for disability sport, guaranteeing world-class resources that reinforce the FA’s commitment to football for all.

Upgrades have already been made, including a refresh of team briefing rooms in 2024 and improvements to the on-site Hilton.

Plans continue into 2025, carrying on in phases until 2028, all while the venue remains open for national squads, external bookings and hotel guests alike.

Crucially, it will also serve as the Three Lions’ basecamp for UEFA EURO 2028, co-hosted on these shores.

This St. George’s Park upgrade stands as a statement of intent: that England, in every code of the beautiful game, intends to keep pushing boundaries and stay at the forefront of global football.
