New Research Highlights Demand for Personalised Medicines Among UK Adults

Roseway Labs has unveiled new research showing that more than a third (36%) of UK adults feel standard GP-prescribed medicines often fall short of meeting their health needs.

This shortfall, say both patients and healthcare professionals, highlights the urgent search for more personalised healthcare solutions in a system under strain.

Frontline clinicians see firsthand the daily pressures on GP services and the frustrations of patients who feel standardised treatments aren’t working.

Indeed, over a quarter (28%) already worry that 2025 will come and go without better answers for their health conditions.

Yet the findings—released by Roseway Labs, a private compounding pharmacy specialising in tailored medication—suggest hope lies in personalised medicine.

In fact, 73% of people expressed openness to using a pharmacy that customises medicines and supplements to address individual health concerns.

Although compounding services are accessed through private care, broadening this choice could bring relief to many who might benefit from more precise treatments.

In a sign of the times, 58% of respondents believe having a choice between standard and personalised medicines is crucial—a figure that jumps to 80% among Gen Z and 76% among millennials.

As younger generations grow older and encounter age-related health challenges, the demand for a more bespoke approach is likely to soar, spurring the need for immediate action.

A Changing Healthcare Landscape

Compounding

Recent government incentives underscore the urgency of creative solutions to help relieve rising GP and hospital waiting lists.

Compounding pharmacies, including Roseway Labs, can play a part by offering treatments designed to reduce repeat GP visits—especially when standard-issue prescriptions fail to deliver.

It’s an important conversation to have when an average 10-minute face-to-face GP appointment costs about £56.

For practitioners who are new to compounding, patient safety is the watchword. All processes must comply with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) guidelines and the Human Medicines Regulations 2012. This regulated framework ensures all customised treatments are crafted from valid UK prescriptions.

Where Personalised Medicine Makes a Difference

Skin conditions and allergies provide compelling examples of how a small change to a formulation—such as removing a problematic ingredient or switching from a pill to a liquid—can be life-changing.

Adapting dosage forms and ingredients can also enable people to stick to treatment plans they would otherwise abandon due to side effects or allergies.

With an ageing population and growing demand for tailored care among Gen Z and millennials, personalised medicine provides an essential option for those whose needs aren’t met by standard treatments says Miriam Martinez Callejas, Superintendent Pharmacist & Founder of Roseway Labs.

“Often likened to the Savile Row of medicine, compounded treatments offer custom dosages, formulations, and combination of ingredients, much like a tailored suit fits where off-the-rack clothing cannot.

Our goal is to collaborate with GPs and healthcare professionals to make personalised medicine a key part of future healthcare innovations in the UK.”

These bespoke treatments also help tackle medication shortages: when certain drugs are unavailable, compounding pharmacies can formulate alternatives. This agile response ensures patients aren’t left in limbo if commercial stock runs out.

“A one-size-fits-all approach often overlooks the intricacies of individual health needs,” says Elizabeth Philp, CEO & Founder of Roseway Labs.

“A one-size-fits-all approach often fails to address the complexities of individual health needs, leaving many patients feeling despondent about their future.

While regular prescriptions work well for some, others face challenges such as inadequate symptom relief, adverse effects, or difficulty adhering to treatment plans.

Personalised medicine can complement NHS treatments and care, offering tailored solutions that empower patients and help them lead healthier lives.”

Looking Ahead

Roseway Labs continues to champion innovation in personalised care, offering treatments built around each patient’s unique requirements.

Working side by side with GPs and healthcare professionals, the goal is to ensure personalised medicine is a realistic option within the UK healthcare system, potentially easing some of the burden on the NHS.
