Come March 2025, the International Olympic Committee will roll out the red carpet in Greece for a bit of an administrative showdown.
We’re not just talking discus and dashes here, folks. This is about picking the new head honcho, the big cheese of the IOC at the 143rd session.
Let’s meet the lineup, a cocktail of royals, lords, and champions all stirred together.
Who’s on the Starting Blocks?
Leading the pack, we’ve got HRH Prince Feisal AL Hussein, adding a dash of royal flair. Then, there’s Lord Sebastian Coe, who knows a thing or two about the thrill of the race, both on the field and in the corridors of power.
Splashing from the poolside into the fray is Mrs. Kirsty Coverntry, followed by Mr. Johan Eliasch, who swaps his executive chair for a runner’s stance.
Riding close is Mr. David Lappartiant, pedalling his vision from the cycling world, while Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch trots in with a name that’s practically Olympic royalty.
And let’s not overlook Mr. Morinari Watanabe, flipping from gymnastic rings to the ring of leadership battle.
The Road to the Podium:
All seven contenders have made their ambitions official as the deadline chimed in on September 15, 2024.
The candidates will present their programmes, in camera, to the full IOC membership on the occasion of a meeting to be held in Lausanne (Switzerland) in January 2025.
More information on the election of the next IOC President, including the directives and applicable rules, can be found on the dedicated page of the IOC website.
This isn’t just about who gets the gold; it’s about shaping the ethos of the world’s foremost celebration of sport.
