Hyrox Bilbao 2025 was just the perfect excuse to flee the dreary skies back home in Blighty and indulge in a welcome dose of Spanish sunshine.
Stepping off the plane into a balmy, low-20s climate was like trading a damp cellar for a wide-open terrace—complete with two-euro glasses of wine, mouthwatering cuisine, and a vibrant city that knows how to treat its visitors.
This was my inaugural trip to Bilbao, and I couldn’t have asked for a better setting for a Hyrox weekend. The Bilbao Exhibition Centre—just a brief Metro hop from downtown—pulled out all the stops as the host venue.
The space never felt cramped, even at peak times, although the food trucks did run out of supplies later in the day (thankfully, the beer kept flowing for the well-deserved finishers).
As with every event that bears the Hyrox name, the organisation was top-notch. The judges I encountered were friendly, encouraging, and laser-focused on fairness.
Sleds slid without too much fuss, and while the running course had a few hairpin turns, it remained a solid stage for that prized personal best. The roxzone didn’t sprawl excessively either, so it was easy to find your rhythm.
I’d put in a solid training block before coming to Hyrox Bilbao 2025, and it paid off. I shaved precious seconds to clock a new Pro PB of 73:39—a decent chunk behind overall winner Jake Deardon’s sizzling finish, but a personal victory all the same.
If you’re hunting for a race venue that combines challenge, charm, and great wine, Bilbao might just top your list.
