Hay fever treatments are proving indispensable this season as Superdrug reports a staggering 60% surge in sales of its Own Brand hay fever products.
With the warmer weather and soaring pollen counts prompting symptoms for millions across the UK, customers are increasingly seeking fast, effective relief.
Leading the charge is Superdrug’s new Own Brand Fexofenadine x 30, priced at £8.99 (just 30p per tablet), which has become the retailer’s best-selling hay fever product this year.
Its fast-acting formula promises relief in as little as one hour, making it a go-to choice for those besieged by sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion.
Hay fever, the most common allergy in the UK, affects roughly 13 million people. This allergic reaction occurs when pollen comes into contact with the mouth, nose, eyes, and throat, often triggering symptoms like a runny or blocked nose, watery eyes, headaches, and even earaches.
The increasing intensity of this condition underscores the need for reliable hay fever treatments as the season progresses.
Jamie Archer, Superdrug’s Own Brand Director, comments, “Hay fever season has well and truly arrived in the UK, reflected in the surge in sales we have seen for our Own Brand allergy and hay fever products.
Tree pollen counts are already at an all-time high this year, causing hay fever to hit earlier than usual for many. As a result, we’re seeing more customers seek relief earlier in the season, particularly for symptoms like itchy eyes, sneezing, and congestion.
“This shift in timing is a clear indicator of how environmental factors such as warmer weather and tree pollen counts are affecting our health.
Here at Superdrug, we’re committed to providing affordable and effective solutions that help our customers tackle hay fever symptoms – no matter when they strike.”
In addition to offering effective hay fever treatments, Superdrug is keen to share practical tips to help manage symptoms. Pharmacy Superintendent Niamh McMillan advises: “Keep your windows closed throughout the day in order to limit the amount of pollen that can enter your house. Many people also struggle to sleep due to their hay fever symptoms.
An air purifier can capture the fine pollen particles, helping to improve air quality and reduce allergy symptoms.”
She further explains additional measures: “Itchy and sore eyes occur when pollen comes into contact with the eyes. To help prevent this, wearing sunglasses can provide a barrier against the pollen in the air.
Wrap-around sunglasses are particularly effective, as they also protect the sides of your face, offering extra protection and minimising the amount of pollen that comes into contact with your eyes.
Try adding a thin layer of petroleum jelly around your nostrils. This will act as a barrier, trapping pollen and preventing the particles from entering your nasal passages.”
“ As soon as you get home it is a good idea to change and wash your clothes to eliminate bringing in excess pollen into your home.
Showering at night can also help wash off any pollen that has clung to your hair and skin throughout the day and stop it from making your symptoms worse at night.”
“ Leaving your washing to dry outside leaves it in a prime position to collect pollen. Opt to dry your clothes inside so they don’t collect excess pollen which will then be brought into your home.”
“ Pet hair can be a carrier of airborne allergens, such as pollen, so it’s best to not let them sleep in your bedroom.
Making sure you are hoovering your home regularly with a vacuum that can easily pick up pet hair will also help eliminate the amount of pollen within your home.”
