As the festival season kicks into high gear, from the iconic Glastonbury to London’s vibrant Field Day, music lovers are gearing up for an unforgettable summer.
However, amidst the excitement, it’s crucial to prioritize skin protection, particularly by reapplying suncream regularly.
With the Met Office predicting high UV levels in the coming weeks, the experts at BEAUTY PIE have shared their top tips to ensure festival-goers stay safe under the sun.
It’s a well-known fact that SPF is a daily necessity, but its importance skyrockets when spending extended hours outdoors.
Applying suncream in the morning is a good start, but experts stress the need to reapply it every two hours.
The prolonged sun exposure and intense activity, including all that joyous dancing, significantly increase the risk of sunburn.
Health experts warn that getting sunburnt even once every two years can triple the risk of melanoma. Hence, consistently reapplying suncream, especially during peak midday hours, is essential for skin safety.
To begin with, proper application in the morning is vital. Experts recommend using around two finger lengths of suncream for the face (don’t forget the ears and neck) and six to eight teaspoons for the rest of the body.
This same amount should be used for reapplication throughout the day, so carrying sufficient suncream is a must.
Nicola Moulton, Head of Editorial at BEAUTY PIE, emphasizes, “We know it’s tempting to apply SPF in the morning and think you’re done for the day; however, it’s so important to reapply regularly whilst you’re out and about.
We’ve experienced some seriously hot heatwaves over the past few years, so carrying around a top-up of SPF is essential – especially if you’re sweating it out when standing in the crowds where there’s little to no shade.”
Taking breaks in the shade can also help protect the skin, especially between 11 am and 3 pm when the sun is at its peak.
Festivals often have shaded areas or tented stages—perfect spots to rest and reapply suncream. A quick trip back to camp for a break can also provide much-needed relief for both your skin and feet.
Don’t Skip Double Cleansing
After a long day at a festival, it might be tempting to crawl into your tent and drift off to sleep. However, proper cleansing is crucial after exposure to sun, sweat, and grime.
Festival days can clog pores and cause skin issues if not properly addressed. While cleansing wipes are convenient, they don’t effectively remove all the dirt and build-up from the day.
A double cleansing routine is highly recommended. A balm cleanser, like the Plantastic Cleansing Balm, is a compact and effective option for festival-goers.
Massaging a balm cleanser into your skin not only cleanses but also offers a moment of self-care amidst the festival frenzy.
Nicola adds, “If you’re camping at a festival over a long weekend, then continuing your normal routine with a double cleanse is also essential, if not even more so.
Don’t rely on using wipes alone, as they won’t do the job effectively. Whilst it might feel like quite the task in a tent, a double cleanse will leave you feeling much fresher and can help to remove the build-up of sweat, SPF and dirt from being out all day, helping to protect your skin from breakouts post-festival. It’s important to make sure your skin is enjoying itself too!”
