British & Irish Lions Launch Special Doddie Weir Kit in Honour of Rugby Legend

Scotland and Lions legend Gavin Hastings supports Canterbury of New Zealand, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and The British & Irish Lions' kit launch ahead of The British & Irish Lions 2025 tour.

Doddie Weir may be gone, but his legacy still charges full tilt across the rugby world. Canterbury of New Zealand, in partnership with My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and the British & Irish Lions, has unveiled a special training kit in honour of Lion #670 and in anticipation of the 2025 Lions Tour to Australia.

Developed to memorialise the late Doddie Weir OBE—who passed away in 2022 after battling motor neuron disease (MND) for six years—this limited-edition range pays tribute to both his fearless play on the field and his tireless work raising awareness and funds for MND.

Launched jointly by Canterbury, the British & Irish Lions, and the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, the kit combines the Lions’ signature red with Weir’s instantly recognizable tartan and prominently displays his cap number (#670).

Weir, who earned 61 caps for Scotland and joined the 1997 British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa, once called that trip “one of the best of his career,” even though a serious knee injury unfortunately cut it short.

After his MND diagnosis in 2017, he founded My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to propel life-changing research and financial grants for individuals living with the disease.

In doing so, the father-of-three became one of the world’s most visible MND campaigners, sparking global conversations about finding a cure. He vowed that his ultimate legacy would be the pursuit of a world free of MND.

The new Lions kit includes jerseys, shorts, T-shirts, and fleeces in sizes ranging from XS to 6XL for adults, plus options for juniors aged six to 14.

Prices start at £16.50, with a portion of every purchase directly supporting the Foundation’s groundbreaking work. Scotland and Lions legend Gavin Hastings offered high praise for the effort, noting: “My Name’5 Doddie Foundation is such a great cause, and the Lions were very close to Doddie’s heart. So, to see his tartan on this special Lions kit is brilliant.

“Doddie and the Foundation mean so much to the Lions community, having his Lions number, #670, on the shirt is a nice touch, one I know the fans of The Lions and Doddie will cherish.

“I think he’d be so proud to see his tartan on a shirt that meant so much to him, and he’d probably have a joke or two to make as well!”

Hastings, capped 61 times for Scotland—20 as captain—and a veteran of two standout Lions tours, reflected on the profound impact Weir had on both rugby and its community.

Simon Rowe, Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing at Pentland Brands, echoed those sentiments, saying: “The team at Canterbury are honoured to have been a part of the creation of this incredible range with My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Doddie Weir epitomises what it means to be a Lion, showing incredible determination and courage, both on and off the pitch.

“Canterbury are proud partners of The British & Irish Lions and we are privileged to be launching this kit in his name, commemorating a giant of Lions and rugby history.”

Thanks to this collaborative effort, Doddie Weir’s indomitable spirit continues to inspire fans and players alike—both in the stands and on the pitch—just as he always intended.
