The 2023/24 season marked a historic moment for women’s football as the cumulative attendance for both the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship exceeded one million for the first time ever.
This achievement was announced following the latest round of fixtures, showcasing the growing popularity of the women’s professional game.
Surpassing the previous record set in the 2022/23 season of 689,297 attendees, this season witnessed continued enthusiasm from fans, with significant turnouts at games across both leagues.
The milestone was reached thanks to the sizable crowds at matches held over the weekend, pushing the total attendance for the season past the one million mark.
The record-breaking season extended beyond just overall attendance figures. Over half of the 24 participating clubs achieved their highest-ever league attendance, highlighting the broad appeal and increasing support for women’s football.
Notably, even the second tier experienced its highest-ever cumulative attendance, further demonstrating the upward trajectory of the sport.
Speaking following confirmation of the record, Nikki Doucet, CEO of the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship said: “We’re thrilled to have broken through the one million mark for our cumulative attendance across our leagues.
“Huge credit must go to our clubs and the work they have done in this space – whether it’s the players on the field or those working behind the scenes, this has been an incredible collective effort across the board.
“This season has been one to remember for so many reasons, but surpassing one million in attendance across the Barclays Women’s Super League and Barclays Women’s Championship really does speak volumes about the interest in women’s football in this country.
“This is only the beginning of our journey however, and we’re so excited to see these records hopefully be broken time and time again in the years to come as our game continues to grow.”
This achievement serves as a testament to the progress and growing prominence of women’s football, inspiring optimism for its future growth and success.
