Apple’s [AR]T Walk Brings Augmented Reality to the Streets with Work from Leading Artists

Apple Today at Apple ART ART Walk Pipilotti Rist 073019

Ever wanted to experience art in a completely new way? Apple is making it happen with its latest AR-based experience, [AR]T—an immersive blend of technology and creativity designed to bring contemporary art to life in public spaces and Apple Stores around the world.

Teaming up with New York’s New Museum, Apple has curated an interactive art tour featuring seven of the world’s top contemporary artists, including Nick Cave, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg, and Pipilotti Rist. And the best part? It’s totally free.

Forget hushed galleries and “do not touch” signs—[AR]T Walk is taking art to the streets. With a tap of your iPhone, digital masterpieces will appear in locations like London’s Trafalgar Square, New York’s Grand Army Plaza, and San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Gardens.

Expect the unexpected. Pipilotti Rist’s “International Liquid Finger Prayer” practically plays a game of digital tag with you, bouncing and singing as you chase a shimmering form.

Meanwhile, John Giorno’s “Now at the Dawn of My Life” turns the urban landscape into a rainbow-coloured trip through poetry and wisdom.

Lisa Phillips, director of the New Museum, sums up the project: “Augmented reality is a medium ripe for dynamic and visual storytelling that can extend an artist’s practice beyond the studio or gallery and into the urban fabric.” In other words, this is art you don’t just see—you step into it.

If you’d rather create than just experience, Apple’s [AR]T Lab has you covered. Designed in partnership with artist and educator Sarah Rothberg, this 90-minute session at Apple Stores worldwide teaches you the basics of AR using Swift Playgrounds. Even if you’ve never coded before, you’ll leave knowing how to bring digital objects to life—no fancy equipment required.

[AR]T in Apple Stores: Step Inside Nick Cave’s “Amass”

Not near an [AR]T Walk location? No problem. Every Apple Store worldwide is hosting Nick Cave’s “Amass,” an interactive AR piece designed to flood your screen with “Ikon Elements”—vibrant digital objects that symbolise positivity and community. All you need is the Apple Store app to dive in.
