If there were ever a place to make anyone consider crossing the bridge to veganism, Mildreds Soho would be it. Fresh off a major glow-up, this plant-based powerhouse in the heart of London’s bustling Soho has swung open its doors with a vibe that’s less “restaurant” and more “experience.” It’s not just a place to eat; it’s where culinary creativity meets cosy urban funk.
Nestled on Lexington Street, Mildreds Soho has transformed into something that demands attention. That new deep blue façade with its cheeky pops of orange. It’s impossible to walk by without wanting to peek inside. And trust me, you’ll want to step in.
The moment you walk into Mildreds Soho, it feels like you’ve stumbled upon a cosy retreat. The space is alive with bold colours, lush greenery, and playful art that tells the story of the restaurant’s 35-year journey. It’s not just a facelift—it’s a complete transformation.
Now spread over three floors, there’s plenty of room for regulars and newcomers alike to soak in the new vibe.
And if you’re planning a special event, the second floor has an intimate 18-seater private dining space that’s already proving popular, especially for those holiday get-togethers.
Mildreds manages to feel both warm and buzzing at the same time. You can curl up in one of their cozy booths, each with its own quirky charm and wallpaper, and it’s like you’ve escaped the noise of the city for a bit.
It’s the ideal spot to chill out while still soaking up the energy of the place. It’s like every corner has its own personality.
Add in some coral and red gloss trims, plus a mural that could keep your eyes busy longer than you’d like to admit, and you’ve got a venue that oozes atmosphere.
But let’s talk about the food, because the star of the show deserves its spotlight. To kick things off, I indulged in the Salsa Macha Hummus, a delightful dish that feels as much like a work of art as it does a starter.
Candied pine nuts and pumpkin seeds dance over the top, while smoky Mexican peanut chilli oil adds a punch of heat, all resting on a beautifully crafted bowl of creamy hummus. It’s the kind of starter that sets the bar for the rest of the meal.
For the main course, I couldn’t pass up the house favourite, the Mushroom Ale Pot Pie. And let me tell you, this isn’t just any pie. It’s a comforting forest mushroom stew with a golden puff pastry lid that’s just begging to be broken into.
Served with smashed peas, mint oil, triple-cooked potatoes, and a generous ladle of red wine gravy, this dish is nothing short of exquisite.
It’s easy to see why this has become a fan favourite for the Mildreds crowd—hearty, flavourful, and perfectly comforting.
Naturally, no meal is complete without a dessert, and I just couldn’t pass up the Butter Rum sticky Toffee. This indulgent treat layers spiced date cake with a sweet pineapple compote, topped off with salted caramel ice cream and a sprinkle of gingerbread crumbs.
Every bite was pure joy—warm, rich, and packed with flavour. Honestly, it’s the kind of dessert that feels like a celebration in itself.
Behind the magic is Sarah Wasserman, the culinary genius in charge. She’s outdone herself this time with dishes that are not just for the hardcore vegans but for anyone who loves good food. “Whether you follow a vegan diet or not, my team and I have always focused on creating amazing, innovative food that just happens to be great-tasting vegan food,” she says.
And that’s what Mildreds is all about: whether you’re all-in on plant-based or just dipping a toe into the vegan pond, you’ll walk away satisfied and satisfied this man certainly was.
CEO Sam Anstey is clearly pumped about the restaurant’s new chapter. “We’ve been trailblazers of plant-based food for decades, and our home has always been Soho, the heart of London’s most vibrant district,” he says.
“I am extremely proud to re-open Mildreds Soho and after the refresh of our elegant Grade II listed townhouse site, I look forward to inviting back our loyal customers as well as new guests alike.”
As if all that wasn’t tempting enough, diners at the Soho location get a complimentary cocktail throughout October. Because, why not?
If Mildreds has taught us anything over the years, it’s that plant-based food can be indulgent, exciting, and worth celebrating.
And if you’re one of those people who likes to bring the restaurant experience home, there’s a growing line of Mildreds’ bestselling cookbooks ready to help you recreate that magic in your own kitchen.
So whether you’re a die-hard fan or just a little vegan-curious, Mildreds Soho is back and better than ever.
It’s more than just a meal—it’s a testament to bold flavours, vibrant interiors, and the sheer joy of plant-based dining. Here’s to new beginnings, and here’s to delicious discoveries.
