Oakley release Eye Jacket and Eye Jacket Redux together. Born from the digital revolution (before the digital revolution was even a thing), Eye Jacket is a true design and fit game-changer of the 1990s and beyond. Now rechoreographed as a limited-edition revival set including Eye Jacket Redux, these design renegades are back.
In a throwback to ‘90s and current basketball culture, Oakley features NBA players Kelly Oubre Jr. and Damian Lillard and who follow in the footsteps of ‘90s sports icons who wore the styles off the court.
The original Eye Jacket was created by Oakley’s designers by leveraging the latest product innovation from the era. Designed using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) allowed for sculptural design and the manifestation of XYZ Optics, where the frame and lens puck line up with the eye to see through the optical center for the best optical clarity.
The original frame was one of the first created on 3-D printers, enabling on-the-fly design adjustments and rapid prototyping for new iterations. By controlling the development process, Oakley was able to create frames that perfectly bridged the past, present and future.
The original appeal for Eye Jacket was embraced as a lifestyle-to-performance piece worn in the world’s of basketball, surf, running and snowboarding throughout the ‘90s – ultimately becoming an icon in the decade’s pop culture scene.
Today, the brand’s rich heritage is rechoreographed for Oakley’s One More Dance, with an encore of this memorable silhouette.
Both the Eye Jacket and Eye Jacket Redux make a bold statement and can be immediately recognized. The new take further revolutionizes the style with its double nature – serving as the ultimate eyewear choice for both performance and lifestyle.
The two frames will be sold together with just 250 pieces available for purchase worldwide.
“I grew up in the ‘90s, during what many consider to be the golden era of professional basketball,” said Lillard. “It also happened to mark the introduction of Eye Jacket and Oakley’s first major strides in the game of basketball.
I remember seeing Eye Jacket on the faces of many of the game’s top players back then and it’s still immediately recognizable to me today.
It is a privilege to be part of this campaign and help bridge Oakley’s basketball presence from past to present, from a time when both the sport and the brand flourished.”
“I’ve never been afraid to take risks, especially with my style,” said Oubre Jr. “I’ve created a look that is uniquely my own.
At the same time, basketball is my life – my passion for sport and style is synonymous with the Oakley brand and is a big reason why I am excited to represent Oakley in basketball; especially when I get to be part of a launch with such a globally recognized and iconic product.”
