Thirteen teams are all lined up this weekend to celebrate the relaunch of what is arguably the top women’s national club competition in the world, as the 2020-21 season kicks off in Italy with the start of the Women’s A1 League.
Last season was rudely interrupted and subsequently cancelled as the coronavirus pandemic swept across the country, so the 2019 champions Igor Gorgonzola Novara (and also reigning European champions) restart their quest to defend the national title – though they are the team that rests on the opening weekend and will only see action on Day 2 of the competition, 27 September.
But reigning world champions Imoco Volley Conegliano, leaders of the table when last season’s edition was cancelled, are there from the very start, when they host Epiu Casalmaggiore on Sunday.
Conegliano have already set off on the right foot, when they beat Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio 3-0 in the Supercup, earlier this month, led by Paola Egonu and USA’s McKenzie Adams who each scored 12 points.
The Regular Season of the current, 76th edition of the Italian A1 League is set to wrap up on 27 February and will be followed by the Playoffs, where the top four teams of the table will enter the quarterfinals.
