Last month saw the opening of the first “holistic vet” practice in Glasgow, opened by trained vet twins, Reagan and Jordan Carnwath. Supplementary to evidence-based medicine, the holistic offerings include herbal remedies made from the likes of camomile, mistletoe and burdock, as well as addressing diet, exercise and emotional well-being.

Seen as a revolutionary move within veterinary practices, holistic remedies are set to become far more prevalent for human treatments.

Traditional prescription medications have long carried the caveat of palpable side effects, including the onset of further health issues and the threat of addiction.

New national research from EOS Scientific, the UK’s leading CBD oil testing service, would indicate that as Britons feel significant dissatisfaction with the prescribed medication on offer to them, suggesting that holistic remedies could experience a surge in popularity amongst disgruntled patients.

Prescription dread

  • 24% think the best thing their GP could do for the treatment of insomnia is to provide effective alternatives to prescription medication (11.4 million)

  • 14% have taken prescription medication for mental health before and the side effects alone (e.g. insomnia, drowsiness) have dissuaded me from using them again (7 million)

  • 15% have used anti-depressants but they have not helped my anxiety at all, or if they did, it was sporadic (7.3 million)

  • 14% have left a long-term issues relating to anxiety and insomnia untreated over many years in order to avoid prescription drugs (6.7 million)

  • 30% of Brits are wary of approaching a doctor about their anxiety as they don’t want to be prescribed medication that may be too severe for their symptoms (14.9 million)

  • 24% of Brits prefer to manage their anxiety with holistic remedies (11.3 million)

  • 38% of Brits would use CBD oil to manage their anxiety and insomnia (17.4 million)

According to the insurers Aviva, 16 million Britons suffer from insomnia and with a further 6 million Britons experiencing anxiety-linked illness. Narratives nationally and globally have shifted massively over the past five years with regards to discussing mental health related ailments and it seems that the treatments that people receive are also on the brink of evolution.

Simon Manthorpe, CEO of the UK’s leading CBD oil testing service, EOS Scientific, analyses how holistic remedies such as CBD oil has been revolutionising the wellbeing markets in the UK.

“At the end of 2019, the value of the British CBD market was estimated to be worth £300 million, with this valuation expected to quadruple by the end of 2021. We know that between 2018-2020, the number of people in the UK increased by over 100%. We suggest that this growth is in part due to the relative time CBD has been available in the UK – let’s not forget that less than five years ago, CBD wasn’t even recognised on the UK Fast Moving Consumer Goods market.

When using CBD, we stress that one shouldn’t expect CBD to be an immediate cure. We are still in a relative stage of infancy when it comes to academic studies, but the initial signs are excellent. If you are to use CBD, make sure the product is suitable for your ailment. Tinctures are probably the most versatile use of CBD oil, helping with issues such as insomnia and anxiety. In addition, we advise that consistent use of CBD is the most beneficial routine for application.

Variety is the spice of CBD. The compound has so many versatile applications. Ranging from balms to tinctures; edible gummies to cosmetics, there are so many forms that CBD can come in. How many other health compounds have such a diverse range of applications? CBD is becoming far more prevalent in high-street pharmacies, with pharmacies using this versatility to their advantage.

Our research has highlighted that British patients are experiencing a growing disgruntlement with prescribed medications. With medical professionals keeping a keen eye on CBD oil, healthcare in Britain looks like it is embarking on a stage of wide-scale evolution.”
