Why Most Brits are Choosing to Celebrate the Festive Season Down The Local

With streets sparkling with festive lights and the mouthwatering aroma of roast turkey filling homes, Britain’s community spirit is really coming alive this Christmas.

A recent survey by Smart Energy GB found that nearly half of us—49% of adults—are planning to celebrate the festive season at our local pubs.

It’s all about the community spirit—neighbours, friends, and local pub staff coming together to share some festive cheer.

The pub isn’t the only local business benefiting from festive cheer. Many Britons are choosing to support their neighbourhoods this Christmas by shopping small and buying local.

A quarter (25%) are ordering their turkey from the local butcher, while nearly half (47%) are stocking up on festive fruits and vegetables from greengrocers. Cheese boards will feature regional flavours, as 42% are turning to nearby delis for their Christmas selections.

When it comes to sweet treats, 25% are skipping supermarket aisles in favour of local bakeries, bringing home mince pies, gingerbread men, and other festive delights.

The spirit of community extends to gifting too, with 26% opting for local gift shops over the convenience of online shopping.

A Christmas Boost for Local Businesses

The survey uncovered something genuinely heartening: Brits are choosing to support local businesses not out of obligation, but because they truly want to.

Around a third (33%) see shopping locally as a more sustainable choice, while 28% value the personal connections they create by returning to their favourite spots.

Even more inspiring, a whopping 72% of people said they’re on friendly terms with the small business owners in their community.

This sense of community is driving festive spending, with many making multiple trips to neighbourhood shops throughout December.

On average, Britons will make six visits to local gift shops, five to the butcher, six to the baker, five to a wine shop, and six to the greengrocer.

Challenges Amid Festive Cheer

The holiday season offers a much-needed lift for local businesses, but it’s not all smooth sailing. Skyrocketing energy bills and rising overheads are keeping many small business owners up at night, with 74% worried about winter energy costs and 80% feeling the pinch from increased expenses.

Even with these challenges, 57% of small businesses have stepped up, extending their opening hours to meet the festive rush.

For many, this time of year is absolutely crucial, with 76% admitting it’s the most important season for keeping their business afloat.

Victoria Bacon, director at Smart Energy GB, highlighted the importance of balancing holiday cheer with smart solutions: “It’s great to see Brits supporting their local businesses this Christmas.

Over half of small businesses are extending their hours, even though running costs are a concern. Getting a smart meter installed can help small business owners manage their energy usage and costs.”

The Importance of Community at Christmas

From enjoying a pint at the pub to savouring a warm loaf from your favourite bakery or picking out thoughtful gifts at a local shop, the Community spirit truly highlights how supporting small businesses is at the heart of British holiday traditions.

This festive season, the strong bond between communities and their local businesses will shine brightly, creating cherished memories that bring warmth to even the coldest winter days.
