Unyielding Spirit: Ex-Royal Marine Conquers 435-Mile French Pyrenees for Veterans’ Charity

At an age when most people are planning a quiet retirement, Jonathan Thomson, a spry ex-Royal Marine in his 80th year, has just clocked an astonishing 435 miles cycling through the rugged terrain of the French Pyrenees.

This wasn’t just a ride; it was a statement, a final hurrah in a series of gruelling challenges that raised over £153,000 for PTSD Resolution, a lifeline for veterans battling the shadows of their service days.

Dubbed the ‘Pyrenees 24,’ Thomson’s latest adventure mirrored the daunting task of cycling from London to Edinburgh while conquering elevations surpassing the height of Mount Everest.

Not alone in his journey, Thomson was flanked by a band of brothers—former Marines and service members who shared his resolve.

Over a week, they powered through historical villages, lush forests, and awe-inspiring mountain vistas, weathering storms and fatigue with unwavering spirit.

Why push oneself to these extremes? Thomson answers simply, “Many of our veterans, regardless of age or duty status, suffer from the devastating effects of PTSD.

It destroys lives, disrupts families, and all too often leads to tragedy. For us, every mile, every mountain we conquer, is for them—for hope, for healing.”

The cause they ride for, PTSD Resolution, is more than a charity. It’s a beacon of hope, providing effective, accessible therapy for veterans and their families across the UK.

With over 200 therapists nationwide, the charity ensures that help is just a phone call away, helping veterans reintegrate into civilian life without financial burden.

As Thomson hung up his helmet on September 18th, marking the end of his cycling challenges, the reverberations of his efforts extend far beyond the physical distances covered.

“This is our final ride,” he declared, with a mix of relief and pride. His journey may be over, but the paths he has paved for many veterans seeking peace will endure.

For those inspired by Thomson’s tireless dedication and wishing to contribute, the ‘Pyrenees 24’ donation page remains open.

Every penny continues to fund vital therapy sessions, offering a lifeline to those who once served us.
