Stress is pretty normal in our culture, whether it’s at home or in the workplace. We’ve all felt the pressure of an approaching deadline, money worries or relationship difficulties.
And while we cannot avoid pressure, it’s crucial that we are able to identify when pressure turns into stress, and better yet – to prevent it. Persistent stress impacts all areas of our lives, including our mental and physical health.
When we’re stressed our blood pressure increases, as well as our heart rate, metabolism and the flow of blood to our muscles – it’s an evolutionary hang up that once helped us run away from a saber-toothed tiger! But now this happens in response to everyday worries and anxieties.
Persistently working long hours is one of the most common factors involved in developing stress. Just recently, a team at Angers University and the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research discovered that people who work more than 10 hours a day for at least 50 days a year are up to 45% more likely to suffer from a stroke.
I reckon it’s time for us to speak openly with our employers, who have the power to lessen work-related stress. Pressure may be unavoidable, and a reasonable amount of stress is manageable in the short term, but it’s crucial that we are all equipped with the skills to manage our stress levels effectively. If employees can confidently identify problems before they escalate, employers will have a happier and more productive workforce.
