As a society, we are spending less and less time with each other due to technology, work-life commitments and more – yet runners long for a sense of community and belonging for their collective well-being and performance.

According to a new lululemon report, nearly three in five runners would be willing to pledge to invite a friend or family member to run on Global Running Day. The online survey of more than 2,000 adults in four countries*, conducted by The Harris Poll examines the benefits of running together.

As a society, we are spending less and less time with each other due to technology, work-life commitments and more – yet runners long for a sense of community and belonging for their collective well-being and performance.

The survey finds that the more we run together, the happier and more connected we are.

  • Over four in five runners (85%) agree that spending time with others contributes to their happiness overall

  • Nearly seven in ten (69%) believe that if more people around the world ran, we’d be better connected

  • Over two thirds (67%) feel the world would be a better place if we ran together

Despite diverse motivators, habits and outcomes, runners are united by a common desire for stress relief, community and connection. The research finds that running helps to calm the mind (61%) and reduce anxiety (51%).

When we run with others…

…we push ourselves harder.

  • Two in three (67%) push to run farther and/or faster when they run with others

…we feel a sense of belonging and accountability.

  • 63% feel a sense of belonging when they run with others

  • Three in five (60%) are more committed to their runs when they run with others because they are held accountable

…we feel uninterrupted and unburdened by technology.

  • Nearly three in five (58%) feel it gives them the time to talk to people they care about uninterrupted from technology

…we connect with others and meet new people

  • Over half (55%) meet new people by running

Nearly four in five runners feel they should make more of an effort to spend time with others. Now’s the perfect time to expand the runner’s community and celebrate all the reasons people around the world run. Will you pledge to run with someone today?

* The research was conducted online by The Harris Poll on behalf of Lululemon athletica between May 13 and May 21, 2019 among more than 2,000 “runners” – adults (aged 18+) who reside in Australia (n=505), Canada (n=500), UK (n=500), and US (n=501) and who run at least a few times per year.

Data are weighted where necessary to bring them in line with their actual proportions in the population. A global post weight was applied to ensure equal weight of each country in the global total. No estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
