Health concerns surrounding candles

By Monique Hart, founder of The Hart Spa

There is no doubt that we all love candles; whether its for a self-care evening at home, enjoying a long soak in the bath with the gorgeous aromas surrounding you, or if it’s for a gift for someone who needs a little TLC in their lives.

There is no doubt that we all love candles; whether its for a self-care evening at home, enjoying a long soak in the bath with the gorgeous aromas surrounding you, or if it’s for a gift for someone who needs a little TLC in their lives.

One of the questions we should be asking ourselves though is “do we know what our candles are made of?”

A lot of candles on the market have essential oils but that does not mean they are all natural, which is why it is very important to know what you are buying as some use paraffin wax.

Candles that are made from paraffin wax can emit potentially hazardous chemicals which are carcinogenic – these are known to cause cancer in some people. Burning or melting paraffin wax can release numerous toxins in the environment.

Inhaling petrochemicals that are derived from paraffin wax can cause damage to the brain, lung and central nervous system, and can cause developmental difficulties. So, when we burn candles which are made from paraffin wax, we are releasing harmful toxins into our environment which then breath back in.

These findings have also been supported by environmental and pollutant experts. A candle that is not made of natural wax can cause greater damage than inhaling second-hand smoke from smoking.

Thinking about fragrances in a candle, synthetic fragrances found in many candles can disrupt the endocrine system affecting hormonal health and can trigger weight gain and set you to have potential health concerns decades later.

Essential oils on the other hand, are made from organic oils and there is no danger from these as they remodulate themselves and work in a friendly way once inhaled in our body and have a therapeutic benefit to the nasal cavity.

It is very important for myself to create a product range that is 100% natural and benefits my clients and their mind, body and soul.
